Valentine’s Day. The perfect day to go out with your significant other, trade flowers and chocolates, then sit on a bench holding hands and staring into each other’s dreamy eyes…
Oh wait. You’re single.
Don’t worry, I am too. And Valentine’s Day is not just about romantic love, it’s about all love. Here’s a few fun ideas to celebrate some of those other kinds of love!
1. Friendship
Recently, celebrating friendship instead of romance has been a trend all over the world. This is popularly known as “Galentines” for girls and “Palentines” for all genders. Grace Yang (10) reminisced about a time when she celebrated the holiday, remarking, “When we celebrated Galentines, we had a whole potluck. Everyone brought something.” Her sister Joyce Yang (10) added, “We made heart-shaped pizzas and went swimming.” A few other ideas to honor your friendships would be meeting up with those friends for a Valentine’s Day themed hangout at your usual spot. Or you could buy Valentine’s Day themed gifts, like candy hearts or chocolates.
For a less expensive, more thoughtful activity, you could meet up and make cards for each other, or contribute to a good-natured baking competition. If you’re in the mood for a fun, cheesy time, a rom-com movie night might be the perfect Galentines day activity for you.
2. Family
Love that’s often overlooked since it occurs so naturally is the love between family members. While there’s national holidays like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, it’d likely be much appreciated if another day was spent honoring your parents. And I’m sure sisters and brothers wouldn’t say no to a little celebration too!
Cooking favorite meals for busy parents or siblings is a great way to help out. Cleaning up around the house for them, whether that’s organizing a bedroom or doing chores for a sibling, is another amazing way to show that you care about your family. Of course, you could always take them out to a nice dinner or buy them a thoughtful gift.
3. Self Love
Unfortunately, this type of love is overlooked for less positive reasons. But sometimes everyone needs a day to take care of themself, and remind themselves that they are worthy of being loved just as much as friends, family, romantic partners, etc.
A few gifts you can treat yourself to are spa or massage days, where you make sure your physical body is taken care of at the same time as your mental state. You could also take the day to try something you’ve always wanted to try, or continue a hobby you haven’t had time for recently. In general, anything that will help you relax or make yourself feel special would be a good thing to do this Valentine’s Day, in honor of yourself.
Whether you do or don’t have a romantic partner to spend Valentine’s Day with, you can still celebrate the holiday’s trademark love with someone else in your life. Surprise a friend, a family member, or even yourself with something to brighten their day, and remind them that they are loved.
