After April 3rd, Yorba Linda High School’s head football coach and teacher of 17 years, Mr. Jeff Bailey, will become the head football coach and Director of Strength and Conditioning at Beverly Hills High School.
Coach Bailey started his coaching career at Esperanza High School as their assistant football coach before becoming the head coach at El Dorado High School. During his time at El Dorado, the Golden Hawks won 4 consecutive league titles and 4 consecutive Southern Section titles from 2006 to 2007.
Coach Bailey left El Dorado in 2009 to become the founding head football coach at Yorba Linda High School. In these 17 years, he led the YLHS football team to 12 playoff appearances, 12 winning seasons, 4 Crestview Championships, and a CIF SS D3 Championship in 2022.
When asked about his fondest memory at YLHS, Coach Bailey recalls the moment that “I won a championship here with my son.” Aside from that, he highlighted that “we’ve had some unbelievable success and wins, but the whole community has been awesome.”
The Yorba Linda community really rallies together, as Coach Bailey “think[s] we travel better than any other team around because… the community does a great job of supporting the program and donating and helping us have all the best of everything here.” He believes that “the hardest thing about [leaving YLHS] is leaving this community.”
The cheer and song head coach, Coach Stacy Shube, reflects on her experience with Coach Bailey in that “it has been really easy for me to work with him because we’ve been on parallel paths—we got hired at [Esperanza High School] at the same time.”
Coach Bailey’s commitment to the YL community rings true as Coach Shube recalls the Sofi stadium game at the start of the season, and how Coach Bailey “wasn’t just about, this is great for the football program. He was about [bringing] everybody on board—so let’s get band there, let’s get cheer and song there.” She described him as a “big tent kind of person,” someone who tries to build up campus culture and spirit rather than just his own program. It is for that precise reason that “there is a big loss” as Yorba Linda High School closes its chapter with Coach Bailey.
As Coach Bailey prepares to step away from Yorba Linda High School, his impact continues to resonate far beyond wins, titles, and statistics. For many within his program, his legacy is defined not just by success on the field but by the culture he built and the relationships he formed along the way.
YLHS Athletic Director Coach Platt emphasized Coach Bailey’s dedication to the program, sharing that “[Coach Bailey] is very dedicated and committed, with the time that he has put into this program, which he calls family, and the effort he shows all around.” His words reflect how Coach Bailey didn’t just lead a team, but built a program rooted in commitment, pride, and a strong sense of belonging. Coach Platt also notes that “he shows the kids how to work hard and do the right things on and off the field, leading them by example,” underscoring how he shaped the broader athletic community and left a lasting mark on Yorba Linda’s identity.
Under his leadership, the football program became more than a team—it became a source of pride for students, staff, and families. From Friday night lights to championship games, Coach Bailey created an environment where athletes were pushed to succeed not only as players but as individuals. His emphasis on discipline, unity, and accountability helped define what it means to be a Mustang.
For the players who experienced his leadership firsthand, the impact is deeply personal. Varsity football captain Onassis Lim (12) shares that “[Coach Bailey] had taught me how to be a leader, not just on the football field, but rather in all aspects of life. His traditions and customs will forever be remembered, making the Mustangs unique and who they are today.” His words reflect the respect that can be felt on and off the field, reinforcing the idea that Coach Bailey’s greatest accomplishments may not appear only in record books but in the lives he helped shape.
Varsity linebacker and running back Michael Ibarra (12) extends the same appreciation towards Coach Bailey. He affirms that “[Coach Bailey’s] impact goes far beyond the field. Wherever [he goes] next, they’re getting a great coach and an even better person.”
While the next season will mark the beginning of a new era for Yorba Linda football, players and staff alike recognize that the program is built on a foundation that will continue to guide them forward, As Lim noted, “Coach Bailey’s traditions and customs will forever be remembered, making the Mustangs unique and who they are today,” emphasizing that what he established has become part of the program’s identity rather than something dependent on one individual.
As the community says farewell, one thing is certain: Coach Bailey’s impact will not be forgotten. Instead, it will live on in the program he built, the people he inspired, and the culture he helped create, and while he takes on a new challenge, Yorba Linda will always remain a place where his legacy continues to thrive.
