On Wednesday, January 7, 2026, a 37-year-old woman named Renee Nicole Good was shot by an agent associated with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The shooting occurred south of Minnesota in a residential neighborhood with many witnesses present. A few witnesses managed to film what happened which caused a lot of controversy from viewers online about what actually occurred.
Renee Nicole Good previously lived in Colorado, but recently moved to Minnesota with her family hoping for a new beginning. Good is reported to have been a registered U.S. citizen, while the statuses of the rest of her family remain unknown. She was also a mother of three children一including a 15-year-old daughter, a 12-year-old son, and a 6-year-old son. Renee thoroughly enjoyed creative pursuits such as writing and poetry. She even studied creative writing at Old Dominion University, where she went on to graduate with an English degree and win a poetry prize during 2020. Many of her family and friends remember her as loving, compassionate, and caring.
Although there have been ongoing debates about the growing presence of ICE in many U.S. states, many continue to worry about their safety as traumatic events continue to occur. On one hand, ICE claims that the ICE agent fired in self-defense. On the other hand, local authorities and witnesses claim that the victim was unarmed and was in no way utilizing the vehicle as a weapon. Tara Chen (12) expresses, “It is important to wait until all of the details regarding the situation come out instead of drawing conclusions immediately.”
The Mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, has even come out to speak on the situation. Frey strongly urged ICE to leave Minneapolis alone, believing that ICE has caused more distrust rather than safety. He assured residents in Minneapolis that he would ensure that officials will secure justice for Renee. He also urges people to maintain unity and peace during these difficult times.
However, protests began soon after the incident occurred with residents pleading for limits on ICE presence and immigration enforcement tactics. Many residents are left being genuinely concerned for not only their own safety, but for the safety of their neighbors as well. Many protests are also demanding accountability and justice regarding the shooting. Minnesotans continue to stand alongside Renee Nicole Good and her family throughout this devastating situation. Amaury Otero (10) says, “It is amazing to see how unified a community can be, especially during uncertain times.”
