Friday night’s home game against the El Dorado Hawks was nothing short of an edge-of-your-seat matchup. Going into the matchup, the Mustangs carried only uncertainty, as many students and fans expected Yorba Linda to struggle against the Hawks, who have built a strong reputation this season. Before the start, the odds seemed strongly not in favor as YL still adjusts to a new roster.
Yet, what happened on the court was the opposite of many expectations.
From those very first minutes, the Mustangs started and continued playing with intensity and strong determination, exactly matching El Dorado’s pace and not letting them take control. Instead of falling behind early, Yorba Linda stayed confident and competitive, applying all of the correct defensive and offensive moves. The first quarter featured back-and-forth scoring, setting the stage for one of the most suspenseful games of the season.
The scores remained close throughout the first half, and the energy in the gym only continued to rise at every play. Cheers from the crowd and shouts from the fans kept the Mustangs on their feet the entire time, and it was clear that this was not the game many had predicted. It was a true, genuine battle between two rivals, evenly matched teams.
The second half brought even higher stakes, as both teams continued to trade points, with the lead changing hands numerous times. Neither side was able to build a comfortable advantage, keeping the student section… As the time only faded during the last minute of the game, and Yorba Linda was down two points, senior player Josh Wilerer scored a two-point basket, tying the game and heading into overtime.
In the final moments of the game, Yorba Linda was again down just two points in the last 15 seconds, with one last opportunity to change the outcome. As the clock ran down, Jake Waters took a three-point shot that could have sealed victory. The entire gym seemed to hold its breath, but the ball fell just short.
The final score–53-51 in favor of El Dorado– only reflected a narrow defeat, but far from a lack of effort.
Senior, Zen Bayani (12) adds, “Going into the game, we all knew it was going to be a tough fight. Though we fell just short at the end, the atmosphere of it all really made our nights.”
Senior player and teammate Josh Wilerer (12) agrees and adds, “I knew we could’ve beat them. We put up a great fight, and the fans cheered us on like never before, yet it sucks to have lost and somewhat succumbed to the doubts.”
