What Makes the Shamrock Shake so Popular Every Year?

A Shamrock Shake always brings a smile to my face.

Towards the beginning of March, McDonald’s never fails to release its famous Shamrock Shake. It’s known for having a delicious minty flavor, with small hints of vanilla inside of it. The shake also has a smooth and rich texture, similar to that of a soft serve. Topped with fluffy whipped cream, the Shamrock Shake is quite tasty. McDonalds has a wide selection of original and seasonal desserts, so what makes the Shamrock Shake special?

I enjoy watching the Shamrock Shake be released each year! I love its minty flavor.

    — Hannah Chong (10)

Let’s go back to the origins of the Shamrock Shake. It was first introduced in 1967, by a McDonald’s owner named Hal Rosen. Looking for a way to bring in customers around St. Patrick’s Day, Rosen invented the delicious shake we know and love today. McDonald’s first introduced it to their menu in 1970 and the rest is history. An interesting fact about the Shamrock Shake is that it used to be lime flavored up until 1973, when it was edited to be a vanilla shake with green food coloring. In 1983, the minty flavor that we are used to today was added. Good to know!

What many may or may not know is that social media played a huge role in popularizing the Shamrock Shake. Many would post their opinions and reviews of the dessert or take aesthetic photos with it. There is already one trend I have seen this year with the Shamrock Shake, similar to that of the Grimace Shake, another one of McDonald’s known desserts. Rather than pretending to be sick from the shake, people are changing into green Irish attire, matching the color of the Shamrock Shake. These videos are quite fun to watch and definitely will continue to draw more attention to the treat. “I enjoy watching the Shamrock Shake be released each year! I love its minty flavor,” announces Hannah Chong (10).

At last, it’s time for the most important question: Does the Shamrock Shake really taste as good as people make it out to be, and what’s the recipe behind it? First, I’ll answer by listing the ingredients it contains. The Shamrock Shake is a combination of McDonald’s vanilla soft serve, whipped cream, and “Shamrock Shake syrup,” also known as mint flavoring. You can find a more in-depth list of ingredients on the McDonald’s website, all contributing to this yummy treat. As for the first part of the question, that’s for you to decide. Try the Shamrock Shake for yourself, and you may be pleasantly surprised with just how good it is! Enjoy!
