With so many classes, sports, performing arts, and clubs, there is no denying that Yorba Linda High School is home to a plethora of bright and talented students. Among the 1,600 students who attend the school, there is one star who shines bright: Gavin Esqueda (9). Gavin truly sets himself apart from the crowd and is a prime example of academic excellence, dedication, and leadership.

Gavin is a freshman in the 2023-24 school year at Yorba Linda. Despite only being a freshman, Gavin is always on the lookout for opportunities to get more involved, and he has already made an impact in many aspects of the school. He has a position on the PTSA and is a contributing member of several clubs such as Astronomy Club, Debate Club, Days for Girls, and Fitness Club. Additionally, Gavin is the ambassador for Clubs and Extracurriculars. Gavin always takes time out of his days to get involved with the school’s community while also having fun.

In addition to contributing to the brightness of campus life, Gavin believes it is equally important to perform well in his classes. With a constant thirst for knowledge, he forms strong bonds with his teachers and always participates in class discussions. Academically, Gavin consistently earns top marks in his classes along with outstanding citizenship. His favorite subject is math, and he is currently enrolled in Mr. Goebel’s Geometry class. After his fifth period, Gavin participates in track and field for the school.

Outside of school, Gavin dedicates much of his time to his passions and favorite hobbies. He especially enjoys writing and reading; his favorite book is The Atlas Six by Olivie Blake. Gavin also has a strong interest in playing the guitar. He explains, “I think I’ve always sought after the guitar [because] of its many forms and overall versatility. Many songs that I enjoy listening to are on guitar, so to be able to play those exact songs myself brings great joy! Overall, it’s a fantastic way for me to express emotions in ways that words may fail to do.” On top of all his school work, Gavin manages to have a healthy balance of hobbies that allow him to explore his self-interests.

Overall, [playing the guitar is] a fantastic way for me to express emotions in ways that words may fail to do.

— Gavin Esqueda (9)

In the future, Gavin plans on attending UC Berkeley or UC Santa Cruz to pursue a career in either philosophy or astrophysics. However, he will continue to work hard for now in school and sports and receive high accolades. Here at Yorba Linda High School, Gavin Esqueda is one of the most stellar students on campus and certainly has a bright future ahead of him.
