Hallmark or handmade? When it comes time to give a gift, oftentimes one of the hardest parts of gift-giving is the card that comes with it. For many, it is so simple to stop by a local CVS, Vons, or, if you’re feeling fancy, maybe Target or TJ Maxx. So why is it that handmade cards are so valuable, even if some of these extravagant cards sold at stores come with pop-up decorations, lights, and can even play songs?
Handmade cards hold a special place in the hearts of many for a variety of reasons. To note the obvious, handmade cards display a reflection of care and individual attention, which can make the card feel more heartfelt and personal. For Mother’s Day, I gifted my mom a hand-drawn card that was far from perfect, but she nonetheless appreciated it because it reflected the effort that I was willing to put in for her. Even though a store-bought card has a bigger price tag, with loved ones, it usually isn’t about how much a gift costs but what it’s truly worth. Isabelle Gregg (12), a senior at Yorba Linda High School, also made a handmade card for her mom this past Mother’s Day and noted that “it feels more special when I handmake a card for anyone because it feels more personal and it shows that I care enough to take the time out of my day to make something for someone. ”
Not only do handmade cards reflect care, but they also have the opportunity to be easily personalized, turning a simple piece of cardstock into a priceless gift. Each handmade card, even if you decide to copy a design off the internet or get inspiration from Pinterest, is unique and truly one-of-a-kind. Making a handmade card also allows you to personalize the card to whoever is receiving it. Ways to personalize this card include adding handmade illustrations or maybe just drawing simple sketches of something that the recipient loves. This personalization adds a special touch that store-bought cards fail to replicate, adding to the sentimental value of your homemade card. McKenzi Reiter (12) shares that she always makes a handmade card, whether it is for friends or family, because she believes that “even though a handmade card isn’t always as fancy or nice as a card I can buy, I think handmaking a card makes it more special and meaningful.”
In the end, whether a card is covered in glitter, decorated with markers, or simply includes a kind note, what truly matters is the sentiment and thoughtfulness that comes with each handmade effort. As birthdays and holidays approach, take this as your sign to take 20 minutes of your busy schedule to dedicate to handmaking a card because this will truly be the priceless addition to your gift.
