James O’Neil, a senior at Yorba Linda High School, was nominated for the Notary Club’s Most Improved Award, having been recognized by staff members for his dedication and effort in academic and personal development. While his “academic journey has been a rollercoaster,” James did not let obstacles stand in his way, showing remarkable progress as an individual. Although he has dealt with many of his internal battles on his own, James attributes much of his success to those around him, including his teachers and his mom.
Cheering for him through every trial and success he’s persevered through, James’ mother, a single mom, has “always encouraged [him]…she has taught [him] that hard times don’t last and can be overcome.” Accredited as his “biggest inspiration,” James continues to carry the sacrifices she made and her values with him daily. “I try to apply her honesty and kindness to my everyday life,” he states.
Since middle school, James has battled addiction. Eventually, his family helped in changing how he views the world, and he has found joy in going to the gym, spending time outside, and participating in the arts. Healing and growing are often accompanied by hurdles; for James, those oppositions manifested in a combination of absent motivation and personal issues.
However, his ability to overcome them and remain on a road to further development truly speaks to his strength. He emphasizes the nonlinear path of growth, expressing, “I put myself in bad situations over and over, which I really regret. I learned that I struggle with a lot of things, but I have also learned to be more independent, and I am actively working on finding ways to motivate myself.”
Despite his challenges, he has transformed “from a freshman not knowing his strengths and talents to a young adult with amazing dedication to his creative abilities in the arts,” according to his counselor, Mrs. Pike (S), who chose him for the award. One of his teachers, Mr. Schumerth (S), affirms, “He has always had a positive impact on his peers and gets along well with everyone. I’ve seen his maturity level grow, but it’s his dedication to going above and beyond in the art department that has been so impressive.”
James’ gratitude and surprise at being nominated are a testament to his humility and positivity. A lesson that he has learned after years of confronting hardships and reflecting upon them is to reach out to people for comfort and advice. He expresses, “[It] might seem like the hardest thing to do, especially as a guy, to talk to someone. It can be a friend, family member, or even a teacher. Talking about how you feel can be very insightful and helpful in finding ways to work through said challenges.”
His journey proves that small steps of resilience define success and asserts that change is possible at any moment. James shares a piece of advice for students facing a similar situation: “When going through rough patches, remember that how you feel in the moment is not how you will feel forever.” For James, his story isn’t merely composed of his setbacks and struggles, but also the choices he made to rise above them and persevere. His nomination as the Rotary Club’s “Most Improved Student” demonstrates his academic achievements and growth as a person, artist, and student.
