Hiking has recently become one of the most popular ways that people can take a relaxing break away from social media and their busy lives. Not only does it offer an exciting adventure, but it also offers several physical health benefits, accessibility, and overall mental health improvement. Hiking is also especially helpful for those interested in building strength, endurance, and balance.
Unlike many other forms of physical activity, hiking is accessible to everyone especially since it requires little to no equipment, and it is free of charge. The only necessary equipment individuals would have to bring with them are comfortable shoes, snacks, and water. Hiking can also be done either individually or with friends, which makes it great for a variety of individuals who carry different preferences.
According to the National Park Service, hiking can actually improve an individual’s overall mental health because it significantly decreases stress and anxiety. Hiking is meant to be a calming outlet that increases an individual’s overall mood. Additionally, hiking appeals to an individual’s five senses, which is what makes it such an immersive experience. Lily Monheimer (12) explains, “Hiking is such a fun outdoor activity to do because it allows you to explore nature.”
Social media has definitely played a major role in the rising popularity of hiking, as many share scenic photos and pictures with friends from the end of their hikes. Furthermore, many also post suggestions of certain trails they have enjoyed recently. A couple popular hikes located around the Orange County area include Black Star Canyon, Red Rock Canyon, and the Eucalyptus Trail. Black Star Canyon is most famous for its rock climbing and waterfall at the end of the trail.
However, many say that it is best to go during the winter the week after it rains because the heat often dries out the water sooner than expected during the summer. Red Rock Canyon is popular for its stunning rocks and scenery which makes it a great photo opportunity. Many suggest Red Rock Canyon as a hike for beginners due to its flat terrain and length.
The Eucalyptus Trail also gained attention because of the friendly cows that can sometimes be seen at the end of the trail. “Black Star Canyon is my personal favorite because of its challenging yet scenic views,” expresses Sienna Sweiss (12).
Hiking continues to offer beyond scenic views because it gives individuals both physical and mental benefits which have been proven in multiple studies. It will definitely continue to be an escape from the fast-paced lives that many live in today.
