The Venezuelan president, Nicolas Maduro, was captured on January 3rd, 2026, by the United States Special Forces in Caracas, Venezuela. The U.S. carried out this capture during a military operation called “Operation Absolute Revolve,” which was led by President Donald Trump. Many are curious as to the reason for Maduro’s removal from his presidency, and the reason behind this capture leads back to his assistance in drug trafficking and his involvement in narco-terrorism.
To begin with, Maduro helped manage and lead the Cartel of the Suns, a Venezuelan drug-trafficking organization that included the involvement of many high-ranking Venezuelan officials. He also began participating in a corrupt and violent act of narco-terrorism conspiracy with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), which was a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization. Now, his abuse of power did not stop there. With the help of FARC, he was able to carry out multi-ton shipments of FARC-produced cocaine, direct the Cartel of the Suns to be able to provide military-grade weapons to FARC, coordinate with narcotic traffickers in Honduras and other countries to facilitate large-scale drug trafficking, and gain assistance from FARC leadership in training an unsanctioned militia group that functioned.
In response to discovering this information Ava Rodieck (12) tells us that, “I was extremely confused with the capture of Nicolas Maduro circulating my social media, and understanding more about his involvement in drug trafficking and things like narco-terroism was extremely helpful into understanding the degree of worry of people in the state under his power and people like U.S. officials who saw him as a threat”.
Months before Maduro’s capture, he held a speech in August where he had dared President Trump to come after him after the U.S. raised the reward for any information that could lead to Maduro’s arrest. In his statement, he announced, “Come get me. I will wait for him here in Miraflores. Don’t be late, coward”. Shortly after Maduro’s capture, President Trump stated that the United States would “run the country until we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition [of power]”.
Kennedy Conrad (12) expresses how “this message was completely ironic considering how he was eventually taken into custody under the U.S. power. I saw this video all over my TikTok and did not understand where his frustration stemmed from, so understanding that it started from raising a reward was very interesting”.
Nicolas Maduro was boarded onto the U.S. Navy’s USS Iwo Jima, where he was then taken to New York City to face drug trafficking charges. Two days after his capture, he stood before the U.S. federal court where he pleaded not guilty to drug, weapons, and narco-terrorism charges. Although he pleaded not guilty, he still faces a possible life sentence while his country sits in confusion and uncertainty.
Although the U.S. main point of entry was due to the illegal activities that Maduro was partaking in, other motives ultimately led to moving forward with this military operation. The primary reason is that Maduro posed a significant threat, causing numerous issues that extended beyond Venezuela. Besides Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua, and Colombia are viewed as the key actors of the “axis of socialism” by the United States. Another great factor that drove Trump’s desire to capture Maduro is the oil that stands within Venezuela. Venezuela is known to be the largest oil reserve, but Trump also claims that Venezuela has “stolen” U.S. oil. Another significant factor in the removal of Maduro was the immigration from Venezuela into the U.S. Under Maduro’s regime, over 8 million people had fled from Venezuela and into the U.S. in a decade. This was a huge issue for Trump, especially after his re-election, because his main goal was to prevent illegal immigration into the U.S., and Maduro was only making this goal harder.
Ultimately, Nicolas Maduro served as an extreme threat to the United States due to his illegal activities and his extreme regime. Besides his drug-trafficking and narco-terrorism, other factors, like oil, served as a massive motivation to fully deploy this military operation that led to the removal of Nicolas Maduro.
