In a world filled with constant notifications, streaming, and scrolling, boredom is often seen as something we can and should avoid. Many people rush to fill every moment with their phones or music. However, boredom may actually play an important and positive role in creativity. Instead of being negative, boredom can help our minds slow down, wander, and come up with new ideas.
Boredom happens when the brain is not being stimulated. At first, this feels uncomfortable, which is why people try to escape it. But when the mind is not focused on a specific task, it enters a state where it can freely explore our thoughts. Psychologists call this “mind-wandering,” and it is closely linked to creative thinking mentioned by Psychology Today. During these moments, the brain makes new connections between ideas that normally are not linked together.
Many creative breakthroughs happen during boring moments. Famous inventors, writers, and musicians have their best ideas come while daydreaming, walking, or just repetitive tasks. For example, simple activities like showering, staring out a window, or waiting in line for something gives the brain to think creatively. Without pressure or distractions, ideas are free to grow. Maddie Juhl (12), shares how sometimes she feels that she “thinks most deeply” when she is doing something boring.
Boredom also encourages problem-solving. When students are bored, they can start looking for something interesting to do. This can lead to creativity to spark, whether it’s drawing, writing, or building something. Instead of being entertained, they learn to create their own. This is especially important for students, as creativity helps learning, critical thinking, and self-expression. Matt Toledo (12), shares how being bored in class made him a real architect . “I am really good at drawing buildings now”
However, boredom is becoming harder to experience. With smartphones taking over the lives of most people, people are bored . While technology is helpful, constantly avoiding boredom can limit our minds to being creative. Taking breaks from screens and allowing quiet time can help the brain recharge and think in new ways.
In conclusion, boredom is not as negative as it is made out to be. It gives the mind freedom to wander, imagine, and create. By embracing boredom instead of avoiding it, students can unlock new ideas and develop stronger creativity. Sometimes, doing nothing is exactly what the brain needs sometimes.
