When starting a new chapter in life, like a new year, it is important to set goals and have things to look forward to. That being said, here are some major events to anticipate in 2026.

Sports:

In 2026, there will be many sporting events happening. Firstly, the FIFA World Cup is taking place this year in Mexico, the United States, and Canada from June 11th through July 19th. This is especially exciting as it only occurs every four years, which has built up anticipation from hundreds of millions of fans worldwide. Similarly, the Winter Olympics that are also every four years are taking place in Italy. Most featured sports in the Winter Olympics include hockey, figure skating, skiing, snowboarding, and more. The exact scheduling is set to take place starting February 6th and ending February 22nd. Of course, there is also the yearly Super Bowl. This will be the 60th Super Bowl and is expected to be interesting as dominant teams such as the Chiefs will not make it. This is the first time the Chiefs haven’t made the Superbowl since 2019. Brooke Holmer (10) commented that she is “really excited to see a team besides the Chiefs participate because it feels like repetitive competition. I also love Bad Bunny so I’m super thrilled for the whole event.” This year’s Super Bowl will happen on February 8th.

Movies:

Movie theatres will definitely not be empty this year as some of the most anticipated films are hitting theaters in 2026. Marvel is having a huge year this year as they are releasing both Avengers: Doomsday (December 18, 2026) and Spiderman: Brand New Day (July 31, 2026). Avengers: Doomsday is predicted to do extremely well considering they are bringing back one of Marvel’s fan-favorite actors Robert Downey Junior. Spiderman: Brand New Day is the fourth Spiderman movie in the MCU and is of course bringing back the same beloved cast. Another big movie releasing is The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping (November 26, 2026), which is a movie adaptation of the book prequel released in 2025. Cindy Li (10) added that she has “read the book and looks forward to the movie adaptation. My favorite character in general is Haymitch [the main character for this movie] so I’m very excited.” Dune: Part Three is also scheduled to release December 18th. The other two Dune movies did very well and that is to be expected with this movie as well. 

Award Shows:

2026 has the same award show lineup but nevertheless is still very exciting. The 68th Grammys is taking place in Los Angeles on February 1st of this year. 2025 was a huge year for music with albums from Sabrina Carpenter, Sombr, Lady Gaga, Bad Bunny, and more. They are also adding a brand new category for Best Album Cover, which was separated from the Best Recording Package award. Grace Yang (10) shared that “I’m excited for the Grammys because there was such good music last year. I am really rooting for Olivia Dean to win Best New Artist.” Other award shows happening include the Oscars, Emmys, Tonys, and more; however, the Grammys have been the only one to announce its nominees.

Overall, 2026 will be a fantastic year for entertainment. There are plenty of events to look forward to almost every month from sports to movies.
