An English literature classic, Emily Brontë’s novel “Wuthering Heights” has been re-imagined for the big screen. To be released on Valentine’s Day of this new year, well-known actors Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie will star as the famous characters Heathcliff and Catherine. As for who held directive creativity in the creation of this piece, Emerald Fennell not only directed this adaptation, but was also the writer and producer.
A beloved novel by many, “Wuthering Heights” explores the passionate obsession between lovers Heathcliff and Catherine, who consistently cause one another pain, but never fail to return to each other. Through the use of time jumps and inconsistent narration, readers also explore the following generation’s struggles as they attempt to deal with the consequences of their parents’ actions.
Intrigued by what this adaptation has to offer, Matthew Toledo (12) shares that he will be at theatres on release day, stating, “I really enjoy watching the re-creation of classics. I love noting similarities and differences, and deciding which version is best.”
However, there aren’t many who share this sentiment for Fennell’s adaptation. In fact, there is controversy surrounding multiple aspects of the new movie, arguing that the casting is inaccurate to the novel and that recent trailers have been too sexual.
As for skepticism, Brady Shinkarik (12) claims that he will watch the movie, but “I honestly don’t think I’ll be a major fan. I decently enjoyed Brontë’s book, and I don’t want the new movie release to ruin my ability to enjoy the story for what it originally was. Who knows, though, it might surprise me.”
Beginning nearly a century ago, the first ever adaptation of “Wuthering Heights” was released in 1939. Since then, a variety of other adaptations have been released, an indication that perhaps many believe the remake has the potential to be made even better. As for Fennell’s movie, it has already earned an “R” rating due to its levels of sexual content. This fact isn’t surprising to most, as Fennell is known for her previous works that contain shockingly explicit content. As for runtime, the movie is around 135 minutes long, similar to that of Arnold’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights, released in 2011.
Fennell has made it clear that her movie will focus only on the first half of the story, similar to many other adaptations. Content beyond the death of Catherine will not be shown, removing the stories of three important characters. Nevertheless, whether you appreciate the new release or not, it will definitely be a major topic of discussion after its release.
