Why are people so obsessed with golf again? The comeback of this classic sport which was once seen as exclusive and slow, is now growing fast, gaining popularity and becoming more casual. The popularity comes from the exposure of popular events such as the PGA Tour and golf films such as Happy Gilmore, which create a more modern and relaxed atmosphere around the sport.
Golf is now more accessible and has become a hobby for millions of people, even the younger generations, as it has become especially popular among teenagers and young adults today. Golf’s comeback from being an exclusive pastime to a laid-back social sport highlights a new trend actively engaging with the youth. Without a doubt, the media is the main reason behind the popularity golf has earned. The new generation of golfers attract attention; they are more than sport icons as they influence trends and style surrounding the topic.
The exposure of the game through movies like Happy Gilmore, sparked popularity, as the movie was a big hit and now has become a classic. The light heartedness and humor in the movie create a casual tone towards the sport and inspires viewers to try it out. Similarly, social media has played a big role in redefining golf, as it has made the sport feel more accessible and fun. Before golf was seen as a way for networking and a sport reserved for the rich. Now the successful and fun creators posting about golf pose the sport as trendier and more enjoyable.
What is even more interesting, is the presence of the sport in youth today. Teenagers all around the country seem to be leaning into the sport more and more every day, adding the sport to their hobbies and routines. At YLHS, hangouts with friends have been taken to the course. Senior Luke Moyer (12) shares, “I like golfing with my friends because it’s relaxing but still competitive. It is fun to mess around with each other while playing a game we all like, and it is a good way to spend time outside.”
Similarly, a younger student Chase Brownrigg (10) speaks about his love for golfing, saying, “Golfing is a fun sport to go out and have a good time with friends, and that feeling when you’re hitting the ball perfectly is like no other.” His words show the deeper love and meaning someone can create for something like a sport.
Evidently, golf has become a major component of many people’s lives nowadays. Even for students, as they find pleasure and blissfulness in the sport of golf. What was once seen as an elite sport you could only participate in if you pertained to a certain group, now is a pastime millions enjoy and connect over. Overall, golf’s comeback highlights the evolution of traditional pastimes, and the power of media influence along with the new generations ability to make old things new trends.
