With the onset of their new album, “DO IT,” the South-Korean boy band, Stray Kids, has debuted their album at #1 on the Billboard 200– this album being their 8th consecutive album to do so. In Billboard’s almost 70-year history, no artist has ever debuted an album at #1 more than five times (Billboard).
However, it seems like their music isn’t widely known or heard of. In Isha Arya’s (10) experience, “I’ve heard them sometimes but not too much on the radio.” While their achievements are significant, they still keep a relatively niche profile. Where did they come from, how did they manage to grow such a large fanbase?

Stray Kids is a K-pop group that formed under JYP Entertainment in 2019, originally debuting with nine members—though the group now consists of eight. The key to their success seems to reside in multiple factors—the main ones being specializing in a unique genre of music and their personal involvement in the entertainment industry.
From the beginning of their debut until now, the group has developed a distinctive genre that some fans label as the “Stray Kids genre”-a mixture of hip-hop, trap-pop, rock, and R&B (Stray Kids Wiki). Many accredit this aspect to the fact that they heavily produce their own music, which is a relatively uncommon trend for idols. Sophia Dumitrascu (10) mentions how “Stray Kids’ uniqueness lies in their self-produced, boundary-pushing music that defies K-pop trends.”
Although Stray Kids doesn’t specifically state all sources of their inspiration, it seems like their international backgrounds constantly give fresh perspectives. Two of their members, Christopher Bang, their leader, and Felix Lee, are both Australian. Although one of their members, Han Jisung, was born in South Korea, he lived in Malaysia during his earlier years. Backgrounds as diverse as theirs gives various insights and multiple sources of creativity for their music.

While their music is unique, how have they achieved commercial success? Since 2021, Christopher Bang and and Hollywood-star Ryan Reynolds have maintained a close friendship, eventually leading to the appearance of both him and Hugh Jackman dressed as their respective Deadpool and Wolverine characters in Stray Kids’ music video “Chk Chk Boom,” as well as the inclusion of one of the band’s tracks in “Deadpool vs. Wolverine” (Teen Vogue). Evidently, the group values the creation personal connections throughout their industry.
Additionally, they appeared in the 2024 MET Gala in outfits customized by Tommy Hilfiger, one of the brands they are official ambassadors for. Individual members have relations such as these with other brands as well, such as Versace, UNICEF, and Samsung.

Stray Kids is certainly a versatile group with many factors to their success, consistently innovating and growing in the entertainment industry. Even after countless album releases, this group has always maintained their niche while finding new genres to explore and incorporate.
