During recent years, flag football has gained popularity nationally, especially in high schools. With the rapid growth in popularity, more and more high schools are making flag football an official sport. Flag football is gaining so much attention that it will actually be included in the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. The sudden rise in flag football leaves many individuals questioning: what led to the rapid growth of flag football?
Expanding Opportunities
Flag football has opened doors for many individuals. Flag football provides a safer alternative to tackle football where athletes have a smaller risk of getting severely injured since players are pulling flags rather than tackling. However, it is important to recognize that every sport is injury prone regardless of the rules and safety regulations emplaced.
Additionally, flag football is more inclusive towards women since tackle football is male dominated. This does not limit men from playing flag football because everyone is welcome to join the sport with many schools having co-ed flag football teams. To add on, many parents turn to flag football as an introduction to football for younger children who want to learn basic skills and strategies. Faith Saba (12) recounts her experience and says, “Overall, flag football is definitely a great way to master the fundamentals of football, and it’s great because it includes everyone.”
Being Included in the Olympics
Both men and women flag football games will take place at the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics. Because flag football is a safer sport that does not require a large amount of padding, other countries besides the United States are able to easily compete in the tournaments as well, which is a major factor that led to its approval in the Olympics.
According to the NFL, they will be allowing some of their players to participate in these tournaments. This is great because it will attract a larger audience as many individuals will be excited to see their favorite NFL players. Since flag football was chosen to be included in the Olympics, it has the opportunity to gain nationwide recognition from many other countries. Tina Chen (12) gives insight on her thoughts, saying, “it’s amazing that so many people are gaining interest, and it’s exciting to see a community that includes everyone.”
Flag football continues to showcase the values of teamwork, hard work, and strategy. It continues to grow in popularity with how inclusive and accessible it is to everyone.
