Typhoon Halong struck Japan on Thursday, October 9th, 2025. A typhoon is a tropical cyclone that is similar to a hurricane, just stronger. During a typhoon, winds can reach up to at least 74 mph. In Japan, the wind struck up to 95 knots (109 mph), which absolutely destroyed the Izu Islands. This storm that rushed through Japan has been recorded as equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane. Although the storm is slowly passing by the Izu Islands, it does not mean that the storm, winds, and rain are set to stop. In fact, the remnants of the typhoon are predicted to cause stormy weather conditions in California (MSN).
In California, we are forecast to see rainy weather in the upcoming week and snow in certain parts of California. Although Japan is ways away from California, we are still affected by the weather due to the fast-moving winds that absorb the typhoon’s energy and bring it across to California and areas surrounding it. The idea of typhoon conditions affecting outside sectors is called “recurving typhoons,” which essentially refers to the idea that a typhoon starts in an eastward or westward path and then curves to a more northward path. Even though California will be affected by Typhoon Halong, regions like Alaska’s Bering Sea, Canada, Washington, and Oregon will also be impacted.
Since this storm is falling down the coast, the Bay Area is set to see heavy rain, and the Sierra Nevada should expect to see some snowfall. But the weather is not always predictable, so the direction of the storm could change. If it stays on the coast, the Bay Area could anticipate seeing the biggest storm since last winter, but if the trajectory changes and goes east, the Bay Area should remain clear, while locations like Lake Tahoe can expect to see some snow (Yahoo News).
In Southern California, we have yet to see any extreme stormy conditions, but as of recently, clouds have been shifting and causing some light rain or mist. This typhoon can cause weather conditions that areas like Southern California haven’t seen in several months. The weather has been exceptionally sunny and warm, and this storm can completely change that for everyone, including students. Many students like Chelsey Natividad (12) “ ”. But for others like McKenzi Reiter (12), “[I] love the cold and rainy weather. There is something about rain and the smell of it that brings me comfort, especially during the ideal months like October, but I know it is not always ideal for these types of conditions at school. But, even though some might not enjoy rain at school, I think it can be beneficial to our area since we had a very hot summer, and many areas have become very dry since then”.
All in all, residents from many sections, including California, are expecting to see flash floods and rainy, stormy conditions due to Typhoon Halong. Although these conditions are not ideal, it is much needed in some regions like California, considering they have not received much rain this season. Halong will continue to sweep through different areas, affecting them differently, and people must be aware of the conditions that are soon to approach.
