Trader Joe’s locations across California saw a surge of shoppers this past week when their Halloween-themed mini tote bags hit the shelves. Released on October 8, 2025, the $2.99 canvas tote bags sold out almost immediately, bringing in crowds and long lines that stretched even outside the stores. The bags come in four designs: black, orange, purple, and a multicolored version with black, green, orange, and purple. Despite their simplicity, they quickly became one of the most popular items of the season.
Yorba Linda High School student, Kaitlyn Joe (11) stopped by mid-morning at her local store and said the line was already long. “I came hoping to get one of the Halloween bags. The crowd was pretty big, but it was fun seeing everyone so eager” she said. For shoppers like her, the bags are more than a way to carry groceries, but a new craze!
The demand was pretty impressive. Mike Haug, an employee at the Trader Joe’s in Yorba Linda, shared the sales numbers for the week: “On Wednesday, this store sold 5,620, Thursday, 3,480, then on Friday and Saturday around 2,500 to 2,600, yesterday, 2,300 and it looks like we are done with the sales now.” Even for a simple item, those numbers are remarkable, showing just how strong the hype for these Halloween totes became.
Part of the appeal seems to be coming from the design. Each bag is small but sturdy, ideal for trick-or-treating, carrying small items, or just adding a seasonal touch to a shopping trip. Casual shoppers also seem to be drawn to the variety, often picking up more than one to complete the color set or give to friends. The combination of affordability and collectibility makes the Halloween totes accessible while still feeling special.
The craze isn’t just about the bags themselves; it’s also about location. Haug noted that California seems to have a particularly enthusiastic response. “I’ve heard from other Trader Joe’s workers from different states, and apparently, they are not as popular as they are here. All the stores carry them, but the lines aren’t as big as the ones in California.” The combination of scarcity, local enthusiasm, and social media buzz makes California stores hotspots for these canvas tote bag releases.
Social media also seems to be playing a significant role in increasing the hype. Videos of lines, pictures of color collections, and posts about store availability encouraged more people to visit in person. Many shoppers planned their trips, timing their visits to coincide with when they thought the bags would be stocked or when lines were shortest. In some cases, people even shared updates online to let others know which colors were left, creating a virtual community around what is, at its core, a tote.
The bags sold out quickly at many stores, and for those who got their hands on one (or more), the tote is more than a bag. It is a seasonal collectible and a sign of participation in a cross-generational trend that extends over social media and even communities.
Even though it’s a small, inexpensive item, the Halloween tote phenomenon shows how a combination of timing, design, and social influence can turn a product into something remarkable. From Yorba Linda to other stores across California, the lines for these bags tell a story about community and the way shoppers interact with seasonal products in the age of social media. Ryan Kwon (9), another YLHS student, said he was impressed by the hype even though he didn’t even go, “I couldn’t believe how popular the bags were,” he said. “Just hearing about the lines and seeing the pictures online made me want one too.”
In the end, the Halloween totes are gone for now, but the excitement they generated shows that even the simplest products can have a surprisingly big impact. People waited and shared something as small as a canvas bag, proving that seasonal shopping can still create moments that are both local and viral at the same time.

I saw the line when I drove by Trader Joe’s. I think the bag is cute but it’s not worth waiting in line for it.
