As students dress up this week in monochrome, tacky tourist gear, and more in celebration of Homecoming weekend, ASB is working tirelessly to ensure a smooth and enjoyable rally, football game, and dance. The work that the team puts in does not go unnoticed, and their behind-the-scenes effort and dedication are just as noteworthy as the events themselves.
ASB is a highly student-run class, with senior officers taking on a significant role in organizing the entire event and rallies commissioners creating the script and executing the rally. Everyone in ASB contributes to the overall success of the events leading up to the dance, while Activities Director Mr. Shen (S) “empowers students in the class to bring their vision to life, making sure that they’re meeting deadlines and have the needed supplies.”
ASB shoulders additional responsibilities in the weeks leading up to Homecoming, including coordinating with everyone involved, creating uplifting events for students, working on decorations, and overseeing the nomination and voting process for Homecoming court.
A considerable amount of time is spent on selecting the Homecoming theme. Senior class officers propose five of their favorite ideas, present them to ASB, and hold a class vote to determine the top choice. Ensuring that they plan for both engagement and convenience, Chelsey Natividad (12) shares that they “take into account a theme that’s versatile for the rally, football game, and the dance itself.” After much discussion and voting, Rio de Janeiro was chosen and revealed during the spirited roaming rally.
In addition to setting the theme, ASB conducts Homecoming nominations, creating forms for the student body to submit their favored nominees for Homecoming court. After the top individuals are chosen, another voting form is sent for the queen and king. Finally, the king is revealed during the rally while the queen is announced during the Homecoming football game at halftime.
ASB’s passion and leadership shine throughout the preparations, and collaboration is a significant factor in their success, as Chelsey Natividad (12) says: “We all work close together and split the class into different groups that specialize in designated tasks like painting posters and decorating.”
Before Friday’s rally, ASB worked tirelessly to transform the gym into a paradise, complete with Blu from the movie “Rio” and multicolored streamers and balloons. The ambience was lively and vibrant, with ASB cheering along the sidelines for the performers and their classes. ASB also collaborated to design an entertaining competition for the rally; this year, the game was wig snatching, where freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors grabbed each other’s colorful wigs until one person was left standing.
With the rally and football game ending in success, Homecoming is sure to be an enjoyable night for all students and staff. Without ASB’s commitment to uplifting school spirit, the events would not have the same, and Mr. Shen (S) expresses, “It brings me great joy to see students having fun and making memories at an event that we helped make possible. I hope everyone has an amazing time and they’re able to say that they made a lasting memory!”
