Are we living in a cycle that longs for a piece of the past? Well, through recent trends in digital cameras, surely some people miss the nostalgic look of a photo from a vintage camera.
Recently, various new iPhones and smart phones have been released with savvy functions and impeccable camera quality. Just this month, Apple released the new iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro max. These new phones all have multiple cameras to capture good lighting, increase stabilization, and allow for high quality photos even when zoomed in. In addition to Apple, other competing brands such as Samsung have also been releasing new phones with great cameras. On September 4th, 2025, Samsung released the new Samsung Galaxy S25 FE. This new phone features ultra-wide functions, allowing for landscape photos to be taken and good stability in lower light.
Despite all these new technological releases that can capture the moment perfectly, people have been opting to use digital cameras. Why is this? Abby Reddick (12), a senior at Yorba Linda High School shares, “I think people are starting to like to use digital cameras again because it gives this nostalgic and vintage vibe that you can’t get from a normal iPhone.”
Digital cameras bring a different aesthetic and feel to the photo, bringing out an authentic vibe. In addition to the vintage feel, digital cameras also contribute to the Y2K style that has re-surfaced time and time again. This style is especially prevalent with Gen Z and is popular through social media platforms such as TikTok or Instagram. Through its internet fame, digital cameras became popular as it abides to various different styles.
Another reason why many people enjoy digital cameras is because of the high-quality photos it produces. Digital cameras thrive in low-light settings–something that many new smart phones still lack. If you are at the beach during sunset or at a concert in a dark setting, digital cameras are great at capturing these moments with high quality photos. McKenzi Reiter (12) explains, “I love my digital camera so much, maybe even more than my phone. It gets good photos with amazing quality. I feel like I can get great photos on my camera especially when it’s dark or sunset outside because it gets the colors of the photo really good.”
Back to the past, digital cameras are a popular sensation that maybe you would want to invest in!
