The infamous rivalry between Yorba Linda and Esperanza is one that the whole community knows about and gets fired up for every year, making the football game one of the most anticipated sports events of the year. The energy leading up to the game was vividly present, whether it be through the dress-up days throughout the week or during the roaming rally held on game day. With activities such as these, the student and staff body is united before the kickoff on Friday, September 12th. The anticipation from spirit week carried into the stands, where students, parents, and staff packed the stadium, eager for a Mustang win, and that’s exactly what they got.
As the night began on Friday, the expectation for the game did not disappoint, as the energy on the field and the excitement of the fans rattled through the stadium. Offensive player of the game, Michael Saucedo (12), set the tone with a precise catch he made, creating a significant gain for the Mustangs early on in the game. Later in the game, Saucedo went on to make two touchdowns, helping secure the win against the Aztecs. When asked about his role on the team, he shared, “I think my leadership skills and experience have a big contribution towards the team.” That leadership was clear on the field as the team worked seamlessly together, pushing each other to their best.
After Saucedo’s great catch, number 35, Vaughn Sharp (12), kept the momentum high by scoring the first touchdown in the first ten minutes of the game. He shares, “It felt great to get the first touchdown so early in the game, it really set the pace for the rest of the game.” The early lead from this 10-yard touchdown run charged up the players and the crowd. The touchdown energized the players and pushed both the offense and defense to work harder.
As the game went on, so did the great plays by the players. Although the Aztecs managed one touchdown, the Mustangs quickly struck back. Number 30, Isiah Trujillo, scored two remarkable touchdowns, as did number 35, Vaughn Sharp, who kept the energy high. Finally, the game ended with a high note as number 80, Michael Saucedo, met the end zone for a touchdown. The fans were cheering with excitement and the players celebrated with smiles on their faces.
