Yoga is a physical practice that can date back to 5,000 years ago. It is a mind-body practice that involves several components such as physical postures, breathing techniques and meditation which are practiced to improve overall health and well-being, emphasizing a connection between the mind, body, and spirit. There are several different forms of yoga such as restorative yoga, power yoga, aerial yoga, ashtanga yoga, and much more which all provide their own unique benefits.
There are a variety of physical and mental benefits to this unique way of exercise. Physical benefits include: increased flexibility, muscle strength, improved posture, improved balance, better joint health, good heart health and more. Through its various practices and techniques, you will be able to experience a change in your physical health when regularly practicing yoga. In addition to its physical benefits, yoga also provides an array of mental and emotional benefits. For example, better sleep, reduced stress and anxiety, increased mental clarity, improved body awareness, etc. These mental and emotional benefits come from various techniques such as the intricate breathing techniques which allow participants to enter a state of calmness to remove any stresses.
Despite this, many people often overlook the practice of yoga, stating that it does not require intense physical activity and only improves certain aspects such as flexibility or balance. Likely due to its calm and peaceful nature, many people overlook the physical demand that must be met, especially at a high level. When performed correctly and regularly, the benefits of yoga will begin to be seen and felt. In fact, the football and volleyball teams at Yorba Linda High School have all included yoga as a part of their training, likely due to its various benefits. If athletes are dealing with pains such as back pain or want to improve their balance and flexibility, yoga is a great solution. Yoga connects one’s mind and body allowing for a strong connection which leads to better physical and mental health, which are crucial to student athletes.
Whether you are an athlete looking for ways to improve athletic performance, or someone looking for a good way to relieve stress and tensions, yoga is a great way to solve all of these issues. Mckenzi Reiter (11), a student at YLHS who regularly attends yoga sessions shares, “I love yoga because it makes me really relaxed and calm and after my classes I can really see and feel the differences in my body and my mind.” With this being said, yoga has various benefits and if you have a chance you should definitely try it, whether that be joining a weekly class or just following along a YouTube video!
