“Glossier You” by renowned beauty brand Glossier is an iconic fragrance that intentionally balances a warm musk with feminine floral tones. The scent is recognized for its ability to enhance one’s natural aroma, making it fit for both men and women. Glossier’s diverse target demographic has allowed its influence to expand beyond its origins. Since its foundational fragrance received such immense praise, the company produced a collection of close relatives to “Glossier You”: “Glossier You Fleur”, “Glossier You Rêve”, and “Glossier You Doux”.
“Glossier You” is formulated with notes of sparkling Pink Pepper, Iris, and a warm base of Ambrox and Ambrette (Glossier). The hints of Pink Pepper are meant to emphasize the spice of the Ambrette seeds, whereas the Iris flowers contribute to its earthy florals. The fragrance’s bottle design attains the same degree of creativity while simultaneously maintaining the simplicity of Glossier’s product line. The bottle is composed of the colors pink and red as a testament to the brand, additionally imprinted with a thumbprint on the top right. Since the scent itself is not “complete” without the user, the thumbprint symbolizes the codependence between the perfume and its model. Grace Peng (11) says, “The fragrance suits Glossier’s aesthetic, and I’ve never smelled anything like it.”
“Glossier You Fleur” is packaged in a soft hue of purple, rocking the same Glossier thumbprint as “Glossier You” (Glossier). It is commonly described as a fruitier and lighter version of the original scent, paired with Mineral Salt Accord, Apricot Skin, and Osmanthus. “Glossier You Rêve” is a mature and luxurious scent that is said to possess the most depth amongst its sisters (Glossier). Sarah Kang (11) says, “I am curious as to how this addition to the Glossier fragrance line compares to the original.” The balance of Buttercream, Plum Butter, Toasted Almond, and Sandalwood makes “Glossier You Rêve” most suitable for a formal event or night out! “Glossier You Doux” is a serene fragrance with emphasized violet hues and the same musky ingredients as “Glossier You” – Abrox and Ambrette (Glossier). It is cozy, creamy, fresh, and airy for any daytime excursion.
The perfumers credited with the invention of “Glossier You” are Frank Voelkl and Dora Baghriche, who both attended a French university for postgraduate studies in perfume and cosmetics (Into The Gloss). Voelkl initially lived in Paris before transitioning to his university lifestyle in Versailles. He believes that his childhood environment, France’s fragrance-filled capital, is single handedly responsible for his current pursuits. Baghriche has recently collaborated with brands Yves Saint Laurent and Kiehls to experiment with a variety of niche ingredients. She claims to be attracted to the process of trial and error and continues to familiarize herself with the nature of perfuming. Both artists explain that familiarizing yourself with individual ingredients is a prerequisite for combining multiple fragrances to develop a harmonious perfume. For Glossier’s fragrance debut, the two aimed to develop a scent that felt very “human” and coexisted beautifully with the skin. “Glossier You” undoubtedly strays away from the ideal “linear” fragrance and delves further into a vibrant combination of unconventional notes.
