The idea of a celebrity didn’t come from social media or Hollywood. Celebrities have existed for 1000 years. The meaning has changed and the way they spread but not the origin of being a celebrity. Now the media has a big influence on the next big celebrity. Some people become famous because of their charisma and personality. Some over controversial scandals, and others through their stories. But all in all, the origin of what makes a celebrity ties back to ancient civilizations.
In ancient civilizations, celebrity status was for rulers, warriors, and philosophers. For example, in Egypt, the pharaohs had a sacred meaning to them, making some still known today. In Greece, the gods, demi-gods, and leaders still hold admiration, as many books have been written about them.
Being brave and powerful made these people hold public admiration, which tied them to a standard that can now be seen in celebrities. Zoey Holman (12), a senior at Yorba Linda High School states, “I never thought about people in the ancient times being considered a celebrity, I always thought like Kim Kardashian or Taylor Swift.” Their stories are still told today, which can be seen as a foreshadowing for today’s celebrities.
Invention and innovation in later years brought fame to the creators’ advancement in society at the time. Writers, scientists, and artists were pioneers during these times, leaving a mark on teaching still today. People like Thomas Edison still have lessons taught about them today, and his invention is a product still used all over the world. Leonardo Da Vinci is a celebrity since his work during the Renaissance-inspired many other artists, and much of his work is still seen as sacred today.
The 20th century was a changing point for the meaning of fame. When the radio and television were created, the word “fame” started to be associated with actors and singers. Marlyn Monroe and Elvis Presley are iconic American Figures. Not only was their music known but every detail of their life was broadcasted. Both became global icons and the modern description of a celebrity was born. Fame is now based on imagery, persona, and presence.
Turning to the 21st century, social media and the internet play a big role in the celebrity game. Anyone with a phone and access to the internet can become known. TikTokers, YouTubers, and influencers have been born out of this century as the next big thing. People can become famous just by completing the next trending thing on the internet.
