Are you a junior or senior with strong opinions about the modern world? Do you have an idealistic vision for the future? Would you like to develop your public speaking skills? Do you believe words have the power to change the world? Does writing or speaking about a dream of yours sound intriguing? Would you like the chance to receive scholarship money? Are you someone who would like to help provide relief to those affected by the catastrophic earthquake in Nepal?

If you answered yes to most of the questions above, you should definitely enter the upcoming “I Have a Dream” Speech Contest! Hosted by YLHS Rotary Interact Club under the direction of Mr. Lejano, the 3rd annual “I Have a Dream” Speech Contest is looking for highly motivated juniors and seniors to give a speech on an idealistic vision they have for the future.

Sound like something you’d like to partake in? Here’s what you’ll need to do:

1. Sign up for an audition appointment on the door of room 307 before Tuesday, May 26th. This is the first preliminary round and will be held on Tuesday, May 26th and Thursday, May 27th.

2. Write a 3 to 5 minute speech about an idealistic vision you have for the future. Past topics have included, feminism, environmental challenges, education, etc.

3. Spread the word about the Speech Contest! Regardless of whether or not you make it to finals, June 6th at 6:30 PM in the YLHS Forum will be a time for the community to get together, hear some amazing speakers, and raise money to aid those in Nepal.

Run under the direction of Rotary Interact Club, the adviser, Mr. Lejano, commented, “With this event, we want to challenge the notion that some have that young people are selfish and care only about superficial things. These participants are taking a stand for an issue that is much larger than themselves. They are not selfish, they are selfless. They are not superficial but rather layered in their concern for others.”

In partnership with YLHS Red Cross Club, donations to aid relief and recovery for Nepal after their catastrophic 7.8 earthquake on April 25th will be graciously accepted at the Final Round in the Forum.
