I had a lot of fun at each of the school dances, I love being able to be with my friends and not have to worry about anything!

Homecoming is right around the corner. To some people, the thought of organizing or even simply attending can feel daunting or uninteresting. If you’re on the fence about attending Homecoming, trust me, go. There are few events from one’s childhood that live up to the ongoing legacy of high school dances. Even if you feel like it is not your crowd, at least go for the sake of being able to say you did. Nonetheless, here are a couple of ways to have a successful time at a school dance.

Be inclusive. Putting yourself in someone else’s shoes and knowing how it feels to be excluded from a group is essential. When figuring out your group for dinner, pictures, or events afterward, be mindful of your friend’s opinions and ensure everyone understands the plan and is not out of the loop. That said, remember to respect everyone’s time and money, as everyone has different circumstances.

You do not need a date. Sure, having a date may be fun, but most people agree that going with friends is just as fun. Do not give in to the pressure to have a date. That being said, sometimes going “just as friends” is equally fun, relieving the pressure of any expectation of where things could lead.

Wear the most comfortable outfit, different from what you think people expect of you. In the most respectful way possible, most people are just trying to have a good time and are not worried about what the people around them are wearing (as long as it’s appropriate). As long as you feel confident with what you have, that is all that matters.

Be safe. Be safe before the dance, during the dance, and after the dance. Drink lots of water and make sure to eat. Be aware of your surroundings. Stay with the people you trust. Never be afraid to call for help.

With all of that being said, remember to have fun! While this seems like a rather obvious reminder, people can often get so caught up in the drama and stress that they forget to relax and have fun. A senior at YLHS, Nayeli Ramiez (12), reflects on her past high school experiences, stating, “I had a lot of fun at each of the school dances; I love being able to be with my friends and not have to worry about anything!” Like Dua Lipa once said, “Dance! Dance the night away!” (Dance The Night) and remember not to take everything so seriously.

Super article – really encouraging and well written. Wish this advice had been around when I was in high school – and NO, I was not in high school before the printing press was invented.
