In America, over 66% of U.S. households own some kind of pet. This adds up to around 87 million families (American Pet Products Association). Animals play a crucial aspect in the role of our lives. They provide companionship and essential services that contribute to our well-being. Animals impact us in ways that go beyond simple mutual affection. Their presence influences more than we think; they impact our emotional health, social connections, and even the environment that surrounds us, making them imperative to human life
One of the biggest ways animals affect us is through emotional support. Many turn to their pets for comfort, especially in times of sorrow or despair. Interacting with animals is known to reduce stress, lower heart rates, and improve mental health on multiple levels. Ethan Lee (12) shares, “Whenever I feel overwhelmed with schoolwork or personal problems, spending time with my dog and cats instantly calms me down. I go to them knowing that they will always listen.” The emotional connections animals make with humans are even why they are known to be used as a form of therapy in hospitals, nursing homes, and schools, providing comfort and healing to those in need. Through these bonds, we are also taught responsibility and patience. Taking care of any animal- whether it be a fish or a horse- requires time and commitment. Calista Nguyen (11) shares her personal experience of owning a hamster during her childhood: “I think having a hamster growing up really taught me the importance of responsibility. I developed a sense of accountability that I continue to apply in my daily routine.”
Animals also contribute to our safety and daily lives. Service dogs are known for their reputation of assisting individuals with disabilities, enabling them to pursue what they might have difficulty doing alone while police dogs help detect drugs and explosives. In rural communities, farm animals supply essential resources like milk, eggs, wool, and meat for humans. The role of animals in conservation is also notable, as they help maintain the balance in our ecosystem. Bees are vital for the princess of pollination. They support the growth of fruits and vegetables that are once again, essential for humans.
These creatures have the power to bring groups of people together. Places like animal-friendly restaurants, adoption centers, and even parks all create opportunities for social interaction. Pet owners are more likely to engage in conversations with strangers and 60% more likely to get to know unfamiliar neighbors than non-pet owners (Harvard Medical School). Emma Gustaferro (11) always walks her dogs down at the beach and has helped her “make so many new friends” as they are some of her “closest friends thanks to my pets.”
Animals play such an important role in human life. They give us more than enough emotional support and company and contribute to the environment in more ways than we think. Not only do we thrive in their presence, but they teach us precious life lessons that we often look past.

Great article! I think we sometimes take animals for granted, so I’m glad this article reminds us of the impact they can really have. It’s also interesting to see a few different student perspectives.
