Jewelry has been worn for thousands of years worldwide for countless reasons. In today’s world, jewelry is a way to express yourself, enhance your features, and complete your outfit. However, there are thousands of options to choose from and most might not suit everyone in the same way. In order to select the right jewelry for yourself, face shape and undertones are important factors to consider.
There are a wide variety of face shapes that can differ in size and shape. Finding the right jewelry to complement your face shape will enhance and balance your features. The first step to finding the perfect jewelry is identifying your face shape. There are six kinds of face shapes: round, oval, triangle, square, rectangle, and diamond. You want to choose the one that looks the most like yours and if you’re unfamiliar, choose the closest-looking one. For round and oval faces, you can either wear studs or long dangly earrings, and for your neck, avoid using chokers. Round faces should look for long, V-shaped, necklaces while oval faces should look for shorter necklaces. For triangle and diamond face shapes, opt for long drop or chain earrings, but make sure they are not longer than your neck. Additionally, wearing short necklaces is recommended for diamond-shaped faces. Finally, square and rectangular face shapes can wear all sorts of earrings, including studs, ear cuffs, and small dangly earrings. Square-shaped faces should choose medium-length necklaces while rectangle-shaped faces should opt for collars and chokers. There are many options to choose from based on your face shape and it’s important to find the ones that suit your face and bring out your natural features.
Now that you are aware of your jewelry choices, your skin tone and undertones also come into play and can impact how the stones and metal’s color look against your skin. To determine your undertone, you can start by examining your vein color. Under natural lighting, hold the underside of your wrist under the light and examine the color of your veins. If your veins appear green or yellow, you have warm undertones. If your veins look blue or purple, you have cool undertones. If you have a mix of both colors, then you have neutral undertones and luckily, most jewelry colors will suit you. Additionally, if you burn easily in the sun and/or have paler skin, you are more likely to have cooler undertones. Tanning easily and having darker or more olive skin tones can indicate that you have warm undertones. After deciding what kind of undertones you have, the next step is choosing the color of your jewelry. Cool tones should lean toward silver, platinum, or white gold metals and gemstones like sapphire, emeralds, amethyst, and pearls can enhance your complexion. On the other hand, warm undertones should wear gold, rose gold, and brass metals and should opt for stones like citrine, rubies, coral, or amber. Finally, neutral undertones are very versatile and can wear both warm and cool tone metals and a variety of gemstones will suit you. The last factor to consider is hair color because the hair color combined with the metal’s color can either enhance or detract from your overall appearance. Due to there being so many shades and colors of hair, it’s best to experiment and find what best suits your skin. For example, Harper McLure (10) mentions how she wears gold jewelry despite being on the paler side “to match [her] blond hair and make the golden hues in [her] hair stand out.” Overall, by considering the tips above and experimenting with different types of metals and gems, you will be able to find what jewelry is best for you.
Payton Wadleigh (10) and I both agree that “jewelry should make you feel confident while also enhancing your outfits and natural features.” Whether you base your choices on your face shape or undertones, the right pieces of jewelry will reflect your personality while amplifying your natural beauty. In the end, the choice is up to you, and wear whatever makes you happy and confident.
