Unsurprisingly, when winter and fall approach, many people begin to dye their hair darker or return to their natural color if they previously had color in their hair. But, on the opposite side, as spring and summer approach, many people tend to lean towards the brighter, lighter, and blonder hair colors. Now, let’s examine why people might change their hair color depending on certain seasons.
During the winter, we start to see more people dye their hair cool, dark, or even brassy tones, as those colors in a sense represent that season. The air is chilly and sometimes foggy, and for some people, the ashy and cooler tones fit them best for this season (The A Mag). Francesca Albu (11) tells us, “I just recently dyed my hair back to brunette after having highlights in my hair for a long time. Even though it was a trend, and that helped in making my decision, I just feel that my dark hair suits me best and also ties into the fall time.”
Winter is also a busy time of the year for many individuals, and having a color that needs maintenance very frequently becomes very hard to manage. Having hair that is darker and easier to manage just suits people’s lifestyles as well.
Now, you may be wondering, do people dye back their hair every single year for each season? Of course not, but many people will tone their hair a different color. Hair toner is just a gloss covering your highlights without damaging your hair. This makes it easier for your stylist to revert your hair to a lighter color if you choose to do so over the summer. When going from blonde or light hair to a darker change, it is highly encouraged to aim for your natural hair color or a slightly lighter shade. This will make it easier for your stylist to go back in for some highlights if you desire. If you look to dye your hair to a lighter color over the summer, some stylists recommend that you attempt to keep the change within three light levels of your hair’s natural color (Hair Finder).
Many people dye their hair lighter throughout spring and summer, choosing colors such as bleach blonde, light brunette, honey blonde, and more. Many make this change because “when the weather changes, so does our mindset” (Michelle Cleveland; Popsugar). Michelle Cleveland also tells us that “when it’s warm, we think about light, bright colors, and when it gets cold, we think of dark, matte tones.” It all depends on the individual and how much their mood affects them. The winter and fall times are cold, and some would even say “sad,” which naturally reflects darker tones and influences the change in hair colors. Summer and spring are “happy” seasons, and happiness is usually represented by yellow, which people associate with light, blonde, and honey-blonde hair colors. This is why we see a rise in lighter hair colors during the warm and sunny seasons.
Nathaly Chavez, a current hairstylist, tells us, “I often see hair changes and color changes in the younger generations due to the influence of social media, but I 100% see the shift in what clients want during the winter and summer. During winter, we see a rise in more dark and rich colors, and in the summer, I tend to have more clients wanting lighter and ’summery’ colors”.
All in all, we see that seasons affect people and their hair colors. Every person is different, and with the seasons, changes come. I hope I helped those who fall into the category of switching between light and dark hair colors.

As someone who gets their hair done, I find this article is super interesting. I love to go blonder during the summer and keep it more natural during the fall.
