Your actions will come back around.

What is Karma? It’s not just a Taylor Swift song. Karma is the belief that a person receives some consequence for their own action. What goes around comes back around- that is karma. Karma is the easier explanation as to why things happen for some. Originally, karma started through the teachings of Buddhism and Hinduism; however, the idea is popular amongst many kinds of people. Some believe your karma will affect you in your next life, whereas others see it as an action reciprocating in your current life.

Karma doesn’t always necessarily have to be bad. There is good karma as well. Although there is no real way to prove karma, for some people it’s still a good belief to live by because it will help you understand how your own actions may affect things and could affect yourself in the future. The more popularly known version of karma is the negative effects. For example, if you cheat on your homework, your karma is failing the next chapter test. Although it may not affect you right away, it comes back around eventually. Every action will have a reaction to reciprocate it. Negative intentions will lead to negative outcomes, while positive intentions will lead to positive outcomes.

“I think karma is real. Whatever we put into the universe always comes back to us. I see it happen frequently in the lives of my friends and even mine. Don’t waste time on being mean because it’ll just come right back to you.

— Jennalyn Urquico

In Taylor Swift’s song “Karma” she sings, “Karma is a relaxing thought, aren’t you envious that for you it’s not?” This lyric is not only catchy but very real. She is referring to the people that have wronged her. She is relaxed by the idea of knowing they will get their karma for what they’ve done. Although it is unclear who she speaks about, she states that this person will eventually receive their karma, and the idea of this makes her relieved.

So for the real debate…Is karma real?

For me, karma is real. It makes sense to me, what you put out into the world is what you receive back. In my own life, I see karma occurring. I recently saw an example of this in my own life. If someone is a bad friend, they will get their karma as a “realization” for them to see their behavior. Actions will explain outcomes, which may not be seen as “karma” in everyone’s eyes, but there are many ways to view it. Another example of karma I experienced was when  I hadn’t been listening to the advice I was given when I knew I should’ve, and when I tried things my own way, it turned out poorly.

There is no science behind karma, and it could be a completely made-up thing, but from personal experiences and things I’ve seen, karma is real. Jennalyn Urquico (10) agrees, “I think karma is real. Whatever we put into the universe always comes back to us. I see it happen frequently in the lives of my friends and even mine. Don’t waste time on being mean because it’ll just come right back to you.” With the many examples society has seen of karma, it helps us live a better life because it acts as a motivation to be a good person.
