The 2022 YLHS Football season has come to an end, but what a season this truly was for our tough Mustangs. Preparing since the last off-season and all over summer, the Mustangs had a bright future ahead of them. William Saucedo (12) states early on, “We all know what we want, we want to chase a ring, so everyone is all in and working.” Starting the season off on a high note, our Mustangs had come out strong for their first game away against Damien High School on August 19, ending in a win of 28-19.

The second game into the season, our football team had their first home game against La Mirada on August 26. The game started with high energy immediately, and The Stable was unlike anything before. With our fast offense and strong defense, the Mustangs had won 28-13.

The next opponent was away versus Orange on September 1. This game was easier, but our Mustangs always played their hardest and battled till the end. They won the game 36-7, making their record 3-0. Another game of their season was against San Juan Hills at our home field, bringing home another win of 39-0.

Going into the fifth week of the season, our football team traveled to Simi Valley. On the way, they had a great time on the bus preparing and bonding as a team. During the game, they fought hard and did everything to win. The Mustangs had won the game 33-14. The sixth week of fall football was a little more challenging with an away against El Dorado. Battling hard throughout the whole home, they came out with a win of 24-21.

With four games left, they came across the Battle of Boulevard and the Homecoming game with Esperanza. Our football team won the game 48-7. With only three games left, we played another home against Villa Park. It was a challenging game to battle, and our team had to pull out different ways to win; they won games 31-13. It was an overall fun game to watch, play, and have a social time with each other.

Another big game for our boys was senior night. The seniors all had played but knew some of their football careers were coming to an end. Foothill was on the easier side with a win 41-16. Now with one game left during the ten-game season was away against Brea Olinda. The game started rocky in the first half, but they talked with the coaches during halftime. In the second half, they picked up speed and won the game 56-27. Our YLHS Varsity Football team is undefeated for the second year. The team headed to CIF and made a run for themself. Owen Tesch (12) states, “It is great to be back-to-back undefeated champions. We have put in all that work these last two years, and I think it shows it.”

On November 4, 2022, the first game of CIF was played on our home turf against Charter Oak. The energy at the game was higher than ever before; the Stable, parents and even the team were cheering to push our Mustangs to win. They won the game 31-21. Our Mustangs head to the second round on November 11, 2022, down to Palos Verdes. This game was stressful and hard-fought, but they won 30-26. During the game, our boys battled till the end. Jason Escovar and Ryan Gary were a massive help in the game by blocking Palos Verdes field goals which, if they did not, the game would have been 30-29.

The semi-finals game was fun and surprising. It was on November 18, 2022, against Corona Del Mar, and from all the sports reports, our Mustangs were supposed to lose, but they had other plans in mind. Our football team went strong and destroyed Corona Del Mar to reach the CIF Finals. They won the game 51-20. Wyatt Mosier (12) states, “it is exciting to play football at the end of November. We get to focus on a game without school for a week.” CIF Finals was during Thanksgiving Break on November 25, 2022. Our boys traveled about an hour to Upland High School, and it was a low-scoring and stressful game. In the first half, our Mustangs were up 6-0; at the start of the third quarter, Upland scored 6-6. With 7 seconds left, Jayden Flaig (12), 42 yards out, kicked a field goal to the game 9-6. Our Varsity Football 2022-2023 team won D3 CIF Finals. Making their record 14-0 was unbelievably good, and everyone was beyond proud of their success.

The team decided to go to Regionals/State. On December 3, 2022, our Mustangs played Liberty High School on home turf. Our boys started strong and were up to halftime. After halftime, Liberty found ways to get through us and score. Sadly, our football team’s season ended, but they made quite a name and ran for themselves throughout this incredible season. Congratulations to our Varsity 2022-2023 Football team for an undefeated season, being D3 CIF Champions and going to Regionals.
