Should we have Daylight Savings?

Are Daylight Savings really still necessary in the modern world?

Are Daylight Savings really still necessary in the modern world?

As you know, daylight savings is when the time is either pushed back an hour, or is pushed forwards an hour to save time. This was originally invented for farmers to have more sunlight, and always occurs on the second Sunday of March, and the first Sunday in November. But in today’s age, this change seems almost useless. We have a lot of alternatives to not having sunlight, such as lights, etc. This change is not only useless, but is also dangerous. Putting people’s lives in danger just for farmers to be able to have one extra hour of sunlight is, in my opinion, extremely selfish.

Studies show that Daylight Savings increases the rate of heart attacks. It also has an increase on the rates of strokes by 8%. This being said, this repeating event that occurs twice a year seems almost pointless in my opinion. I personally think that there are a lot of other things we can do to keep the same effects of daylight savings, since this change is clearly not effective, and can cause a lot of deaths, and difficulties in day to day human life. These changes are so simple that it’s almost confusing as to why they have not been done sooner, to prevent the deaths.

A change that can be implemented is adding more street lights. Try to lighten up more of the city that gets dark. And farmers are able to use lights as well. 1 hour of time is not going to affect much, as lights can be a substitute. Jordan Luzzi (10) says “Personally, I’m not a big fan of daylight savings, other than getting an extra hour of sleep.” People also fail to recognize why daylight savings occurs still, as it’s a very old trend that we have kept alive for a reason that is very easy to substitute in order to help the society have better lives.

Overall, I am in favor of getting rid of daylight savings because I do think that we should stay on the same schedule, and adding extra lights would be sufficient for farmers. According to research, daylight savings causes a lot of deadly side effects, as previously mentioned, heart attack and stroke increase. Meaning this is also deadly to society. Hopefully, there will be a change sometime soon that can keep farmers well, and bring down the heart attack and stroke percentage.
