The Benefits of Running a Marathon

The rewards of running a marathon extends beyond a medal or trophy. There are many physical and mental beneficial consequences.
(Grecia Chavez)

Running a marathon is more than just a physical feat; it is a transformative journey for the person who embarks on it. Whether a full marathon or a 5k, completing a marathon doesn’t just give the satisfaction of winning a medal as it can have visible improvements for your physical and mental health.

Firstly, there are multiple mental benefits of marathon running. Endurance sports like marathon running are known to boost moods and alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression. When crossing the finish line, one experiences a state of euphoria which can elevate their mood and provide a sense of accomplishment. The training for a marathon requires discipline and mental resilience since participants must push through physical discomfort and overcome mental barriers.

Moreover, training for and completing a marathon significantly improves cardiovascular health. The rigorous training required to prepare for a marathon strengthens the heart, increases lung capacity, and lowers blood pressure. As participants push their bodies to endure the long miles of running, they not only build physical endurance but also strengthen their cardiovascular system, reducing the risk of heart disease and other related illnesses (connectedcardiology.com.au). In addition, in preparation for a marathon, it is likely that one fosters healthy habits. For example, runners may lose weight because they are eating healthier diets. These effects can impact runners to have a healthier lifestyle.

Participating in a marathon also creates a sense of community among the runners. The shared experience of training and completing a marathon builds a bond among participants. The encouragement and support exchanged among fellow runners during training runs and race day unites and uplifts them. This is credited by Cienna Olsen (10) as she states that “training and going on runs bonded me with my family.” On the other hand, there is also a lot of personal growth involved with running a marathon. During training, one’s improvements can become extremely clear as your pace or stamina increases. Setting goals and successfully achieving them further builds self resilience.

Throughout my marathon preparation process, training and going on runs bonded me with my family.”

— Cienna Olsen (10)

To conclude, there are plenty of benefits of running a marathon. This includes advantages for physical health, mental well-being, building relationships, and personal growth. While the physical demands of training and completing a marathon can be exhausting, the rewards far outweigh the challenges. The journey to achieve this can positively transform runners physically, mentally, and socially.
