There is always a huge gap between the homecoming dance and prom during the school year, and winter formal is the perfect fit between the two. It is a chance to have fun with friends after finals and before AP exams roll in. But is it worth the hype? Let’s dive into the pros and cons of this year’s winter formal.

First of all, the venue was local, which made it extremely easy for attendees and parents to either park, pick up, or drop off their high schooler. This saves money on gas and overall ability to maximize the time at the dance. Next, which could be seen as a pro or a con, was the amount of floors the venue had. There were a total of 4 floors in the venue, one for dancing, coat check, games plus photo opps, and a nice balcony to get some fresh air or take more pictures. However, the amount of people on each floor could get overwhelming at times, with countless amounts of people trying to go up and down the stairs at the same time. When everyone was scattered around the venue, it caused the dance floor to become underwhelming and under hyped. However, I believe most can agree that the different levels of the building was a cool aspect the dance had in general. When asked to rate winter formal out of ten, with ten being the best of the best, Alisha Bhavsar (11) stated, “I would rate it a 7/10 because I enjoyed the music and I liked how spacious the four story venue was!”

Next, the music and food. Although personally I did not eat much food at the venue, the assortments of baked goods and fruit were nice, and the overall accessibility was great for everyone. Personally, I appreciated the amount of water, lemonade, and other drinks that were provided at the front of the dance floor. Dancing can become tiring at times, and it is not uncommon for people to become dehydrated during these types of events. The availability of the drinks made the dance even more enjoyable and comfortable. The music, however, had its ups and downs. It was great that students were allowed to give song recommendations for the DJ at the dance, but some songs that were played did not exactly match the vibes in the moment. There would be times that the beat was about to drop, and the DJ would skip to the next song, making multiple people on the dance floor upset. On the other hand, there would be times people would not know the song and it would just keep going. However, overall the song selection was great, and everyone had a fun time dancing in the circle or jumping up and down.

Overall, I believe that winter formal is worth the hype and is just as good or even better than the other high school dances. If you are a person that enjoys partying and dancing with your friends, winter formal is for you.
