On the very cold and windy night of December 2, the Yorba Linda Mustangs and the Burbank Bulldogs squared off in the CIF Division 8 football championship game.  Both teams had amazing seasons, and it all culminated in the game on Friday night.

At 7 p.m. the Bulldogs kicked off to the Mustangs, who proceeded to drive down the field.  It appeared that their first drive was stopped midfield, but on 3rd down, Burbank was penalized for encroachment which resulted in a Mustang first down.  Pounding the run game due to windy conditions, Yorba Linda moved the ball all the way down to the 4 yard line from where Jaydyn Webb (11) punched in the first touchdown of the game, putting them up 7-0 after the extra point.

Yorba Linda’s Cole Magliano (11) drove a solid kickoff into the wind and pinned the Bulldogs at their own 17 yard line to start their first offensive series.  Burbank went three and out, but a great punt with the wind behind them placed the Mustangs at their own 10 yard line.  The Mustangs were also quickly forced to punt, but this time Burbank capitalized on their good field position and put their first points on the board with a passing touchdown.  At the end of the first quarter, the game was tied 7-7.

On the first play of the second quarter, Webb battered his way down the field on a 32 yard run.  Soon after, he recorded his second touchdown of the game from 2 yards out.  A few minutes later, Webb punched in his third touchdown of the first half (!!!) from 1 yard away, extending the Yorba Linda lead to 21-7.

The Bulldogs responded at the end of the second quarter with a 43 yard rushing touchdown of their own, narrowing the gap to 21-14 by halftime.

Burbank was first to strike in the second half, scoring a touchdown midway through the third quarter and tying the game up at 21-21.  Towards the end of the third quarter, Webb countered with yet another touchdown for the Mustangs.

About halfway through the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs were driving down the field when Yorba Linda’s defense forced a huge fumble which was recovered by Michael Callahan (10).  The fumble led to a Mustang field goal, giving them a ten point cushion at 31-21.  The score would remain that way all the way until the end of the game as the Mustangs easily defended a few desperate plays by Burbank.

AJ Song (10) described his experience at the game in great detail, saying, “The football game was overall a great experience.  I got to have a lot of fun with my friends and I got to meet new people.  After the last second of the game, I felt as if I myself had won the championship.  I will definitely come to more games in the future, and I wish our Mustangs on the football team the best of luck in the playoffs.”

All of the hard work put in by the Mustang football program paid off as they won the first CIF Division championship in YLHS history.
