Teenagers are great proponents of a change of scenery; after all, boredom can’t last forever. The holidays especially tend to drive the sudden urge to decorate their rooms, and fall is no exception. During the fall, bedrooms often adopt a warm and cozy look.
A quick glance at many stores’ best-selling fall picks will show you the same things: seasonally colored towels, pumpkin mugs, and mats with pun-derived wording. These are arguably the least interesting of the bunch, although I personally wouldn’t hesitate to buy a rug that says “please leaf me alone, I’m reading.”
In my experience, the epitome of a fall-like room is scented candles, fun blankets, second-hand paintings, and a blank canvas. Aiza Sheikh (11) shares similar thoughts: “I like vanilla and cinnamon-scented candles. They just make my room the coziest place to be in on a relaxing fall evening.” Sophie Gallegos (11) adds that “soft blankets and the smell of pumpkin spice are a must in [her] room as soon as fall hits.”
Despite the seasonal appeal of many store-bought items, DIY decorating is better than anything you can find in the fall aisle at your nearest Target. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing the fruits of your labor visible on your wall the second you walk into your room.
In October, I made the decision to visit my local HOBBY LOBBY to buy some blank canvases. They quickly transformed into an abstract picture of autumn leaves and shades of orange, yellow, and red, looming in the mix of color.
A trend I keep seeing on the art side of social media also showcases a fun decoration: second-hand paintings. From what I have seen, people have been buying old paintings from thrift stores and painting small pumpkins and scarecrows on them. Fortunately, the final results have not disappointed me yet.
If I appreciate something, it’s a nicely lit room, and warm lighting is very necessary for the complete fall look. A nice lamp to put on your desk or dresser is perfect for creating a fall-like ambience. Warm light could also come in the form of fairy lights or cute figurines that light up both your room and your day.
Returning to non-DIY decor, a fairly typical addition to a fall-themed room has to be the leaf garland. The bright fall colors make your room an instant sensation—speaking from experience—that you and your family will stare at in awe.
I know that decorating your room for any holiday is quite the handful, but I encourage you to use the holidays as an excuse to change your room’s mundane look. If so, I would put DIY decor at the top of my to-do list; you might just enjoy the process.
