Participation has always been a large part of the high school experience. Students have the responsibility of going to school and learning, but participation is key for learning. Not only is participation necessary in school, but it is crucial for online learning.

Teachers go through the struggles every day of seeing ceilings and not faces of students and only communicate through a computer screen and get no response. Teachers plan lessons for their students but they never know if the students learn or not because of the lack of participation in the classes.

Participation is crucial because teachers want to help their students to become better students and gain knowledge. If students participate it benefits themselves and the teacher. It will benefit the student because it demonstrates you understand the concept and if you do not understand the concept you can ask questions.

When you participate to answer a question you help yourself and could possibly help yourself understand a concept in more detail or by participating by asking a question you could ask a question someone else has. The student could be afraid to ask for help but by participating you helped them out. Participation is for yourself, the teacher, and your fellow classmates.

Participation in your classes allows you to engage with the teacher and other classmates, this is helpful because a student could feel more comfortable after participating once and will particle more. If one student is brave enough to participate then others will join and participate as well.

By answering questions or asking questions in class it allows teachers to know where the student or class is at. They can plan a different lesson to help students or take out lessons because they are ahead of the game. Participation is not just a way for a teacher to punish you, teachers are trying to help expand your knowledge and help you become a better student.

Another way to participate in class is to show up. This sounds so simple yet somewhat impossible for some students. Teachers are annoyed with kids not showing up to school on their assigned cohort day and then if they do zoom they do not show their faces.

Sarah Richey (9) said, “I participate in class because I want to learn more and help myself. I also participate out of respect for my teachers because they need to know what the class is at with school and understanding the concept”

Participation is such a good thing for students to start doing and will become easier for students as the school year progresses. I encourage all of you to start participating and to help your teachers and fellow classmates out.
