Should Tik Tok be banned? Are pineapples an acceptable pizza topping? Is AI art acceptable? These are a few of many questions that have recently been in debate. These questions have one thing in common: it causes controversy.

According to Merriam-Webster, controversy is “a discussion marked especially by the expression of opposing views.” When dealing with a controversial question, there is no one correct answer, and this causes disputes. The topics that are brought up are usually easy to understand and peaks our interest in regards to the question. Controversy can be found everywhere in life, from the news to a conversation with friends.

Why do we like controversy? When it comes to controversy, there are many reasons why people find it so engaging. Controversial topics make ordinary things more interesting to talk about. With all the different opinions, it keeps the conversation intriguing and allows people’s opinions to be voiced. Controversy also grabs the attention of people almost instantly. The amount of passion that comes from a discussed topic can quickly rise, making you more engaged in discussing the subject. It is difficult to not take a stance when you are presented with something controversial. This can be used to help promote products and get them into people’s heads, whether good or bad. Controversy can also be used as a form of entertainment. With the more lighthearted questions, debating about it with the people you are close with can be enjoyable.

“I think that pineapples on pizza are delicious…it gives a sweet taste to pizza and helps balance it out.

— Megan Wang (9)

I don’t love pineapples on pizza because the texture of warm fruit feels weird.

— Cynthia Lan (9)

For example, Megan Wang (9) debated with Cynthia Lan (9) about whether pineapples belong on pizza. Starting the discussion with her claim, Megan Wang (9) stated, “I think that pineapples on pizza are delicious…it gives a sweet taste to pizza and helps balance it out.” To refute this, Cynthia Lan (9) replied, “I don’t love pineapples on pizza because the texture of warm fruit feels weird.” Though there was no one “winner” of the debate, it was entertaining to see the different ideas people have on one topic. Everyone has their own respective opinion and it is interesting to share contrasting thoughts with one another.

Humans are drawn to controversy because it allows them to discover new things. It can help people view a topic in a different light even if they have a set opinion on the matter. Learning more about what others think can be a great way to get closer to someone while sharing your hot takes with someone.
