Are Holiday Cards Outdated?

With the presence of social media, the idea of taking time to take a photo, pay for it, and send out cards is becoming increasingly redundant. While some people may opt for a simple Instagram post during the holidays, many families still choose to send out tangible cards. So, is choosing to send out a Christmas card truly worth all of the hassle?

Simply put, it’s all up to the person or family. However, there are certainly pros and cons when it comes down to deciding whether or not it’s a good idea to send out Christmas or holiday cards. Starting us off, one of the most important parts of the holiday season is family time and togetherness. A great way to promote and spread love to loved ones miles away is to send out a yearly Christmas card. Most of the time these cards include a picture of one’s family, a short message of the family’s choosing, and occasionally the ages of the family. The best part about sending out these cards as well as receiving them is being able to get a yearly update from others. Social media has made a yearly update accessible in a matter of seconds, decreasing the value of a card itself. It’s truly a tossup: one of the best factors of a physical holiday card is the opportunity for people who do not have access to social media to receive it.

In my opinion, keeping holiday cards relevant is so important to keep the holiday spirit alive. While they do cost money and time, one of my personal favorite traditions during the holidays is dressing up and taking a family photo. I also love the chance to receive other families’ Christmas cards and see how much everyone has changed in one year. Isabella Colin (11) mentions her opinion on Christmas cards stating, “I love the idea of getting a new Christmas card each holiday season and being able to see my friends!” Of course, everyone will have different opinions on holiday cards, but obviously, they bring joy and comfort to most people.

This holiday season, if you are debating whether or not to send out a holiday greeting card, in my opinion, you should highly consider spending time and effort to send them out. Being able to reach out to loved ones and see their faces every once in a while truly adds to the holiday spirit! Christmas cards are certainly not outdated!
