The Good and Bad of AI

The+Good+and+Bad+of+AI

In the last two years, AI has been the number one trend. ChatGPT, OpenAI, and many other AI prompts have made huge differences in our daily lives. While it has been used for good, it has also been used for bad.

AI can accomplish things that we never thought were possible. From writing essays and songs for us to mimicking other people’s voices. From generating art to being used to make roleplay bots. The possibilities of AI are endless, and every day, it surprises us in more ways than one- not just digitally but also physically. AI is used to operate machines and take care of heavy work for us. Physical aspects aside, it can also help speed up decision-making in the workplace and help create new ideas. It is even used in hospitals, as it can help identify health risks. AI also assists students in school by aiding as a homework helper.

While AI is unique and can help us in several ways, it can also harm us. With AI being able to copy peoples’ voices, there have been reports of criminals using the software to copy the voice of a child and make it seem as if they were kidnapped. The person would be able to demand a ransom, and only then would they let the child go. “I remember hearing a few cases about this on the news. It was scary.” Says Sambhav Puri (10). This led to the idea of using ‘safewords’ when they got on the phone with someone so that they wouldn’t be mistaken for AI. Another issue is that artificial intelligence can stunt people’s ability to think for themselves. The brain is a powerful thing that has invented some of the most revolutionary things in history, but with AI, many people won’t bother to use their brains.

I remember hearing a few cases about this on the news. It was scary.

By relying on AI, they become less innovative and creative. It has also caused job displacement- AI can perform specific tasks just as well as a person could. This can put people out of their jobs and have them looking for another. To top all that off, it stunts social skills. With new roleplay apps such as Character.ai, people lose the ability to interact with others and reduce their mindset to AI. Although AI can produce well-written responses, it lacks the emotional tone and depth a human possesses. In the end, however, nothing can top humans. We’ve created advanced technology, world-changing literature and arts, and much more- and we will continue to do so. We built AI, and we can pull the plug on it anytime we want.
