The Best Grinch Movie
January 9, 2023
The story of the Grinch is one of the most famous ever told. How The Grinch Stole Christmas! is a beloved Christmas movie; however, the odd thing about this Christmas movie is that the main character has no Christmas spirit. He is a cynical grump who has been hurt by the people who reside in the town of Whoville. He intends to steal Christmas to get back at them for the poor way they treated him as a child. However, his plans begin to crumble as he meets a little girl who shows him kindness and generosity. He later returns Christmas, he is welcomed with open arms into Whoville, and his heart grows three sizes larger. The Grinch learns to welcome Christmas “to all Whos far and near.” This plot applies for all versions of The Grinch, but which film does it best? Let’s find out:
Option 1: 1966’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas!. This movie holds a dear place in many hearts, as this is the original Grinch movie; a classic. This animated film truly puts Dr. Seuss’s books to justice. This is a classic interpretation of Dr Seuss’s brilliant, fun, and sweet childrens books. Additionally, the first showcase of “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” premiered during this movie. This song will appear on any Christmas station and is sure to put anyone into the Christmas spirit. And most of all, it’s simply iconic.
Option 2: 2000’s How The Grinch Stole Christmas. The special thing about this movie is not only that we get to see this movie as a live action, but we get to dive into the Grinch’s past. This movie explains why the Grinch hates Christmas. This version also has a wonderful incarnation of Cindy Lou Who, the young girl who spreads warmth into the Grinch’s cold heart. Cindy Lou helps the Grinch and the people of Whoville rediscover the true meaning of Christmas. Another wonderful aspect of this movie was Jim Carrey’s acting. Jim Carrey portrayed the Grinch extremely well, from the way he walked, talked, and used facial expressions he portrayed throughout the duration of the movie. Jim Carrey performed a great interpretation of the Grinch. Emma Reiss (11) believes that Jim Carrey’s version of the Grinch is “without question the best, the others don’t even compare.”
Option 3: 2018’s The Grinch. This version of the Grinch is much different from the other two. This Grinch looks more cute and cuddly than mean and scary. Of course the Grinch is still portrayed as a mean character, but we see more emotion in him throughout the story compared to the other two movies. The animation is incredible, with bright and cheerful lights shown throughout Whoville and the depth in the objects portrayed on the screen. There is also a modern twist on the classic music from the original movie.
These three movies are all bound to put you in the Christmas spirit. Each of these films deserves recognition, as they are all very well made loving holiday movies. Regardless of which one you choose to watch this season, you can’t go wrong.
