Oscars Fashion Frenzy
April 18, 2022
Even if you didn’t watch the Oscars you most likely saw or heard about some of the outfits. Following the Oscars, a lot of media outlets don’t really focus on the winners of the awards but rather on the drama that occurs at these events and the things that people wear. The Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars, are awards for artistic and technical merit in the film industry. They are regarded by many as the most prestigious and significant awards in the entertainment industry worldwide. The Oscars are the biggest award show as of 2021 with 9.5 million United States viewers. (statisa).
With these Awards being so prestigious the biggest and best actors and musicians are almost always in attendance and they are dressed to impress. Fashion is a huge deal within this event circuit and a lot of weight is put on it. Guaranteed, after each of the shows, you will have different influencers, YouTubers, and news outlets rating and categorizing the outfits from best to worst. Not only that, the person who styles and/or designs the outfit is also very talked-about and these verdicts are reflected on to the brand. With that said, brands work tirelessly in order to dress celebrities in the best possible way to have positive advertisements for their company. As said by Vouge, “There is no greater stage than the Oscars when it comes to red carpet fashion”.
The biggest and most luxury fashion brands try to bag the biggest actors of the moment in order to have them wear their designs and hopefully be positively discussed. For example, the brand Saint Laurent which is an extremely high-end company dressed Zoe Kravitz. They ensured that since one of the biggest stars of the night was wearing their design it was very simple and classy in order to be likable by all.
Other celebrities use their outfits as a way to support or bring awareness to causes that they care about and want to spread the message on. For example, Best Actor nominee Benedict Cumberbatch showed his support for the people of Ukraine by wearing the nation’s flag on the lapel of his Giorgio Armani suit. He was able to shine a light on issues that matter in a way that seemed authentic and not overexaggerated. Occurrences like this were extremely common last year with the BLM movement.
A student at YLHS Nikole Galea (10) says that “Personally the outfits are my favorite part of the whole event”.
