With a fierce and competitive spirit, our women’s athletes never fail to show their pride in their sport and school. At Yorba Linda High School, we have many women’s teams, and in the fall, there is volleyball, cross country, golf, tennis, and flag football, and with a sport doubling dipping in fall and winter is cheer and song. Also, in winter, there is soccer, basketball, water polo, and wrestling. In the spring, there is lacrosse, softball, swimming, and track and field.
Kicking it off in the fall is the most women’s team in the three seasons. First off is volleyball; they had an overall record of 17-16, placed 2nd in the league, and made it to the first round of CIF. Another sport that did amazing was cross country; many girls made it to CIF and placed well. The program has a lot of younger girls, and the future looks promising. With playing in the heat on the court, women’s tennis crushes it yearly and overcomes every challenge. Similarly, golf also plays in the heat, and this year, the women’s team played consistently and poured their hearts into every match.
For the first time at Yorba Linda High School, we had a flag football team for more female athletes to join. They struggled a bit, but they learned how to adapt to challenges and still have fun. Lastly, a sport that dips into winter is cheer and song. You can find them cheering and dancing on the sidelines at football and basketball, but they are also working every day for competitions and nationals.
Heading into winter sports, there is women’s soccer, which had an unbelievable season. They had a record of 15-3-5, placed 2nd in the league, made it to round 2 of CIF, and broke the record for most goals scored in a season of 56. Madeline Kerr (12) expresses, “we have a competitive attitude and willingness to fight.” On the other hand, women’s basketball placed 3rd in the league and headed to CIF, but sadly lost in round 1. This group of athletes made a statement of playing for a purpose and for each other. Another sport that made the CIF was women’s water polo; they had a season that showed how they never gave up and fought hard to make it to the CIF. Sadly, they lost the first round but had a great season. The last winter sport is one that indeed shows who a Mustang is, and that is wrestling; with only two girls, Sienna Moyer and Mae Maaytah, in the program, they work to prove to themselves that anyone can do anything.
Our last season of Mustang sports is softball, which has new coaches and is ready for a fantastic season of playing hard and crushing their opponents with the 11 talented players. The last sport to step in Shapell Stadium is women’s lacrosse, which has been working since the beginning of the winter season to prepare for the season; this shows their hard work and dedication to dominate in the season. Inside the same stadium, but on the track, is our track and field team. In this program, we have many demanding athletes ready to work constantly to make it to CIF and make a name for themselves. Lastly, swimming is our last women’s sport of the spring season. Without a doubt, this is one of the best team environments to be around, with people cheering on others, sitting by the pool deck waiting for their time to race; it is just a place to live and compete in.
Congratulations to our women’s teams this year for all their hard work and dedication to their sports for YLHS. Also, good luck to the spring sports left, and Yorba Linda High School knows you have what it takes to make a successful season.
