New Beginning, New Happenings
January 18, 2020
2019 has ended, marking the end of the decade. With the start of a new decade, new things are to come this year. Ranging from politics, technology, science, and more, 2020 is already expecting many things.
The last presidential election occurred in 2016, bringing the heated battle between Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump. Now that the four-year term is coming to an end, there will be a new election with twelve Democratic representatives and three Republicans. A notable runner on the Democratic side is former Vice President Joe Biden, who served as vice president for Obama for eight years. Since there are only three runners from the Republican party–Joe Walsh, William Weld, and President Trump–there does not seem to be much of a competition between the three candidates as there is with the twelve Democratic candidates.
Science and technology are on the rise this year. In regards to science, NASA will have a mission to Mars with hopes to find any trace of life in existence. There will also be 2 Supermoons this year. A Supermoon occurs when the moon is closest to Earth, making it appear visually large. As a matter of fact this rare occurrence is supposed to happen on Halloween. Just like the name states, the moon will be blue on Halloween, so make sure to check it out! In regards to technology, Samsung and Apple are releasing new phones. Apple will release the iPhone 12 with features like a 3D long range camera. Samsung will release the Galaxy s11 in February, and it will have a five camera setup with a 8k quality video, so we can expect some beautiful photos.
In 2020, we cannot miss out on the amazing movie releases that have brought up excitement since 2019. Notable releases include the live action version of Mulan, which will be released on March 27. Fan of DC or Marvel? DC will release a new Wonder Woman movie in June 4 called Wonder Woman 1984, starring Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, and more! Harley Quinn from Suicide Squad will make a return with the movie Birds of Prey, set to be released in February 7 with Margot Robbie playing Harley Quinn. Marvel will finally release the first Black Widow movie with Scarlett Johansson playing Black Widow. The movie will be released on May 1 so look forward to our amazing Black Widow!
Finally, the highlight of this year is definitely the 2020 Summer Olympics! The last time it was held was in 2016 in Rio. This year it will be held in Tokyo, and it will begin on July 24 and end on August 9. There will be a total of 33 different sports including archery, fencing, and athletics. Athletics include track, field, marathons, and decathlons and heptathlons. Japan has built new venues which include a national stadium and athletes village. Tyler Kim (9) said, “I am excited for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo! It will definitely be a fun time to enjoy in the summer.” Overall, the hype for the Olympics is slowly rising as the date is drawing nearer and nearer.
2020 is the mark of a new decade. There are so many things happening in 2020 from releases of movies to the Olympics. With 2020 already starting off with so many things on the to-do list, let’s all have a fun year this year!
