We’ve all watched AI grow within the past few years. Ten years ago, at least to people my age, we hadn’t ever heard of artificial intelligence. Now, we have programs that write our essays and robots that can talk to us. We have AI generated images that actually fool us into thinking it’s real; it has had significant progress over a very short amount of time. Recently, a viral image has gone around that has everybody talking. Have you seen the picture of Katy Perry at the MET Gala in that beautiful dress? Well, what if I told you that Katy Perry wasn’t even at the MET.
This picture shows Katy Perry in a gorgeous ball gown with flowers sewn across the bottom of the dress and filtered to the top. She was standing on the stairs, her dress cascading down the steps behind her. Her jet black hair was in beautiful waves and showed health and long. Her face and waist looked very thin and she looked absolutely beautiful. Most people believed that Katy Perry was the best dressed person that night at the gala.
So as this viral image went around, paired with all the other images of the celebrities at the met gala that night, people fully believed it. They had no reason not to. Quickly, it got out that that image was actually AI generated. Katy Perry wasn’t at the MET gala that night. Katy recalls that even her mom believed the image! Along with the rest of the world.
An AI image of Rihanna at the MET came out as well, but it didn’t circulate the same as Katy’s did. It looked extremely real, she was well dressed, but not as breathtaking as Katy was. Her dress truly was a masterpiece and it shocked people that AI actually designed the best dress at the MET, and it wasn’t even there.
The development of AI is rapid, and it can be kind of scary. But whether you fear it or embrace it, it is truly interesting. It is absolutely incredible what AI can do. It can write poems on topics far and wide. It can solve any type of math problem. It can design beautiful dresses. It can even fool the entire world into thinking that it is real, at least for a couple hours.
So who was the real star at the MET gala? Naomi Peralta claims that her favorite was “Zendaya, she was stunning.” Tyla was incredible. But the people still thought that Katy was the star. So was the real star this year artificial intelligence? You decide. I can’t wait to see what else it has to show us!
