Yorba Linda High School’s publications program consists of three courses: Yearbook, Newspaper, and Video Productions. Mrs. Shay advises the Yearbook, and Newspaper and Video Productions is advised by Mr. Cadra, two excellent teachers with a lot of creativity and inspiration to give to their students. All these programs have their talents and creative outlook on how to feature the school, but in the end, they are one big family that works together to showcase how YLHS is the place to be.
Whether in classes, at the fields, at dance, or just around the campus, you can find a yearbook with a camera in hand waiting to snap the year’s memories. With a class size of around 20 students, they all rally together to create 400 pages worth of memories to look back on for the school year. The editors helped organize the book and edit the book, while the staff fills in the pages by taking photos, writing captions and copy, and interviewing students. Not only does the yearbook create a book for memories to last a lifetime, but they also are a family, and the environment in room 370 is different than any other class. Two-year Editor-In-Chief Emma Perron states, “I have been in the yearbook for four years, and it is my favorite class; every year is different, but no matter what, it is always like a family.”
Another class advised by Mrs. Shay is Newspaper, in which you find these photojournalists writing any article, from News to Opinions and Sports to Features. The YLHS Wrangler is a zero-period class. However, these Mustangs are always ready to find new ways to feature YLHS. Not only do they publish articles in the online newspaper, The YLHS Wrangler, they create printed newspapers for the student body, and they are starting to create magazines. The newspaper class is a great way to connect with new people and our school, but also to be a part of a close-knit group of people who share the same interest in writing.
A senior Emma Safari expresses, “Newspaper was the first class that truly felt like a home. This zero period class became a way to bond with people I would not have met before. I have grown closer to my fellow writers and editors, and they truly are peers I can rely on. Joining newspaper opens up an array of opportunities during high school. It requires going out of your comfort zone and being involved with all school activities.”
Our last publications course is Video Productions, advised by Mr. Cadra. We all know and love this class for their amazing videos that are called “Mustang Mix.” With many hours of filming and editing the films, they always know how to capture the pure joy and emotions of our students. In every segment they make, they relate it to our school, make us laugh, and always help us remember why we love Yorba Linda High School. Vid Pro is one of the most creative classes on campus, allowing students to showcase their talents.
In the end, all our publication programs work together to find ways to showcase the beauty and goodness in YLHS. They work together and love as a family, and these programs give a place for students to feel like they belong somewhere.
