In early 2025, Instagram introduced several significant updates to enhance user experience and position itself against rivals like TikTok. These changes have sparked controversy, as some users have had mixed reactions.
One of the most notable updates is the extension of Reel’s maximum length from 90 seconds to 3 minutes. This change allows creators to produce more comprehensive content and longer videos, meaning there will be less need for multiple-part reels. Many users have welcomed this update, appreciating the flexibility it offers for content creation. However, it is hard to ignore that this seems like a very strategic move to attract creators who prefer TikTok’s longer video format (Creators Instagram).
Additionally, perhaps the most controversial updates are the profile grid redesign and the visibility of liked reels. Instagram has revamped its profile grid layout, shifting from the traditional square format to a 4:5 ratio, which is more rectangular. This redesign aligns with the platform’s emphasis on vertical content, providing a more immersive viewing experience. While some users appreciate the modernized look, others are upset with the change in aesthetic; Elise Doty (11) comments, “I feel like the update ruined my profile’s aesthetic. Now, my page just isn’t as cohesive.”
Concerns have also been raised regarding the feature that displays the Reels users have liked to their friends. This change has raised privacy concerns, with many users expressing discomfort over their activity being more publicly visible. Sadie Smith (11) shares, “I liked some of the updates, like the longer reels, but the new feature to see what videos your friends like is annoying to me because it was completely unnecessary, and now there is even less privacy.” Ironically, this may prompt users to stop liking reels or even deactivate or create new accounts to avoid unwanted exposure (fifteen).
Other new features include “Trials Reels,” comments on stories, and a soon-to-be Story Highlights tab. Introducing the “Trials Reels” feature allows users to post Reels visible only to a random subset of non-followers. This enables creators to experiment with new content ideas without impacting their core audience. Some users see this as a valuable tool for testing and refining content, while others question its necessity and believe it might complicate the posting process.
Moreover, in late 2024, Instagram presented an update allowing users to leave public comments on Stories, making it visible to others who view it. Lastly, to declutter profiles, the app is testing a dedicated tab for Story Highlights, represented by a heart icon between the grid and Reels tabs (vi marketing and branding).
These updates appear part of Instagram’s broader strategy to compete more directly with TikTok, especially amid uncertainties about its future in the United States. By enhancing features like Reels and profile pages, Instagram aims to attract more engagement and those seeking an alternative to TikTok. While some changes have been well-received, others have caused debates and upset reactions.

I also agree that these updates are unnecessary. The new format and different features that are not centered bother me quite a bit.
