McDonald’s is more than just your average fast food chain; it’s a global phenomenon. From their humble beginnings in San Bernadino, California, the Golden Arches and Ronald McDonald have become instantly recognizable symbols worldwide. And honestly, when you think of fast food, McDonald’s is probably the first name that comes to mind. But what exactly makes it so special? And is it true that McDonald’s tastes better outside of the USA?
McDonald’s was founded by the McDonald Brothers, Richard and Maurice, and the restaurant quickly became a hit. Investors saw the potential, and not too long later, the Golden Arches were popping up all over the USA. And then in 1967, the brand went international, opening its golden doors to Canada. From there, it spread like wildfire, with countries across the globe adding their own spin to the menu.
Now, one thing that most people can agree on is that McDonald’s french fries are elite no matter where you are in the world. But beyond that, the menu can vary depending on where you are in the world. For example, in South Korea, one of the standout items on the menu is the Bulgogi Burger, a sweet and savory twist on the classic burger. It ranks amongst the top must-try items on McDonald’s international website. However, compared to food items like this, the USA menu seems bland. While it is true Americans get the Big Mac, McNuggets, and Quarter Pounder, it is less exciting to the regional specialties available elsewhere.
This global variety has left many American McDonald’s fans feeling very envious. If Japan can get a Teriyaki Burger, or India a McAloo Tikki, what specialty can Americans get? It’s almost as if the U.S. gets the blueprint, but the rest of the world gets the better upgrades. And junior Tina Chen (11) can attest to this. When asked which McDonald’s she likes better, she claims, “The food quality and the service is way better in China than it is in America.” However, Tara Chen (11) and Cienna Olsen (11) rebuttal by saying that McDonald’s in America is better. Tara claims, “The McDonald’s are better in the USA because of the Happy Meal toys,” and Cienna says, “The fries are better because they have a greasy quality that adds way more flavor than in other countries.” So that brings perspective to the question, “Is McDonald’s better or worse outside of the USA?”
