Think fast! Would you rather watch a new movie in theaters or on a streaming service at home? While both options are fun and appealing, if I had to choose today, I would stream the movie nine times out of ten.
Online streaming services were initiated in the 1990s and gained traction throughout the early 2000s but have recently skyrocketed in popularity. Nowadays, plenty of apps offer thousands of movies and shows to watch, which are accessible almost anywhere, on any device! More recently, some films that would have otherwise been premiered in theaters are being released straight to a streaming service. For example, the movie Tetris skipped a theatrical release entirely and went straight to Apple TV+ in 2023.
It’s about the origin story of the beloved game Tetris, which is why it would normally have been released in theaters. Whether this switch was caused by the semi-gradual evolution of our technologically advanced society or was accelerated by COVID-19 when everyone was quarantining and businesses were shut down, it has undeniably caused a loss in demand for in-person viewings. This poses the question of whether streaming or cinema is better (Britannica).
A popular opinion of this new age is that streaming is the better option overall, which I agree with. From a consumer or individual’s perspective, most movies are at home. One aspect is that it is less costly than going to the movie theater. On average, adult movie tickets cost around 18 to 25 dollars per person. Of course, this does not include all the snacks many people become tempted to buy or even the gas used to drive there. In most cases, going to the movie theaters has become a somewhat expensive experience, especially since many people often go in large groups. Streaming services have better offers because you can watch it completely free if you wait a few months. Even if you don’t want to wait as long, there will usually be an option to purchase the movie, which typically costs around $20 to $30. This is a better deal since you only have to buy it once, and then the movie will be on your account indefinitely. Also, you only need to make one purchase for the entire group you may watch it with at home.
Another perk of streaming is that it is simply less of a hassle! There’s no need to get ready or sit through thirty minutes of previews since you can watch the movie right away in the comfort of your own home. Personally, I enjoy putting on a new release on my laptop before going to sleep. Additionally, some people find it uncomfortable to sit so close to strangers in movie theaters. There may also be many disruptions, such as loud chewers, noisy kids, phone notifications, or a tall person sitting in front of you. Streaming is also more convenient because if you need to use the bathroom or want to take a break, you can pause the movie and then pick up where you left off, whereas in cinemas, needing to use the bathroom causes you to miss parts of the movie.
Of course, some movie fans prefer the experience of watching a movie in theaters. The appeal of the big screen and loudspeakers is enough to entice some viewers. Others enjoy the effort of getting ready and going out with friends or family. Kayla Duke (11) says, “I like movie theaters better because I get to eat popcorn, and it feels more sophisticated. Plus, my mom and I go all the time.” Several people feel the same way because they like the movie snacks and opportunities to bond with others. I agree, but while this experience is a unique and fun way to hang out, the benefits of streaming make going out to the movie theaters more of a “once in a while” activity for many, especially since you can have a watch party at home with the same group of people and buy your favorite snacks to eat.
Overall, I stand by my opinion that streaming is superior to movie theaters. It is less expensive, more comfortable and convenient, and can still be enjoyed with others. Regardless, watching a movie is always great, and many YLHS students enjoy it. So, which do you prefer?
