Yorba Linda High School’s Welcome Back Dance is a fun and innovative way to kick off the school year as well as bring all the students together from each grade. This year, the Welcome Back Dance was held on September 6. The dance itself had a great turnout this year, ranging from 600-700 students in total, usually the turnout is around 400-500 students. There were a variety of students that attended from each class, and, as usual, the dance was held between 7:00pm to 10:00pm in the middle of the quad on campus. 

The dance usually takes place within the second or third week of school to give students time to plan what they want to dress up as. Although there is no particular theme, students love to dress up in costume-inspired outfits from babies to referees to athletes to cowboys and so forth. The possibilities are endless. Some students even like to put a humorous spin on their costumes and dress up as a pun such as “holy cows”. 

Many groups like to spend their time and effort into their outfits, as they meet up a few days prior to begin assembling their costume. The costumes can be as extravagant or as simple as students please. As a result, this allows students to express themselves and be as creative as they want to be. 

This year in particular, there was a lot of controversy surrounding the dance because ASB needed at least 1000 people to attend in order for Morp, the end of the year dance, to take place. Even though the dance’s attendance did not reach 1000, hopefully ASB can still plan preparations for Morp.  

The music this year was put on by 2 DJs that played a variety of songs by Drake, Cardi, Bruno Mars, Saweetie, and many more. There were also a few throwback songs that students seemed to enjoy by Britney Spears, Beyonce, Fergi, and Lil Wayne. All the songs the DJs played this year seemed to spark excitement and joy in the students as they sang and danced along to the tunes. 

Many students look forward to the dance as they believe it to be “an amusing way to make great memories and have a good time with some of your closest friends” as Savannah Pietsch (12) states. Overall, the Welcome Back Dance is an amazing opportunity for students to get involved with their friends and possibly future friends at Yorba Linda High School. Hopefully, the Homecoming Dance, which will be held this upcoming October, will have the same turnout of students, if not greater, who will have a fun time dancing the night away.
